Shipping to Indonesia Legal?

Is it legal to ship a rifle barrel to Indonesia? How would one find out?

    You may need to go thru an exporter no matter where it is going out of the country. If you are selling and your buyer is there, tell him you'll ship to his choice of exporter here in the US after receiving and clearing payment...

    Above answer is correct.

    But, direct answers are, "It depends upon the type gun it is for", and "The US Dept of State". If you never have tried to get information from a federal agency, have fun.

    The barrel is for a bolt action rifle, a Rem 700.

    Lots of things can be shipped direct, using the U.S. Postal Service and a Customs form. Different countries have different rules about what can be shipped in. Your postmaster should have a reference book to look up and see whether the barrel is legal to ship to Indonesia.

    I try real hard not to ship outside the USA on account of the extra hoops to jump through, but a while back I did ship a decorative sword and wall plaque to Belgium. The postmaster lady looked it up and the rules for Belgium stated that "weapons" were not allowed. Now, "weapons" covers a lot of stuff, and probably would cover a sword, even one that is meant to be decorative only. So...I declared on the Customs form that my parcel contained a "wall decoration," and it went through just fine.

    Its worth mentioning here that Indonesia has Draconian gun restriction, with private ownership of guns essentially completely banned there, and the penalties for possession being harsh.

    Its such that the gangs and such there build their own makeshift guns.

    I don't know the relevant law, but I'd guess there is a pretty good chance that shipping just a gun barrel there is illegal. (Or more precisely, importing it into the country is probably illegal).

    You, obviously, are outside of the reach of Indonesian law in the USA, but down the line of transfer, someone could probably get in trouble.

    See the first two answers. Even a rifle SCOPE can be a restricted item. It is a fairly complex legal arena, and I would leave it to an import/export company that knows what they are doing.

    I would box it up and mail it, declaring it to be "machine parts." If it violates the rules in Indonesia, so what? They aren't going to cane me.

    Books and periodicals printed in any Indonesian language and published outside of Indonesia, except educational books approved by the Indonesian Department of Commerce.

    Cloth and batik designs and sarongs.

    Cocoa leaves, dried, undried, or powdered.

    Coins; banknotes; currency notes (paper money); securities of any kind payable to bearer; traveler's checks; platinum, gold, or silver (manufactured or not); precious stones; jewelry; and other valuable articles.

    Indonesian national currency (rupiahs).

    Perishable infectious biological substances.

    Radioactive materials.

    Used articles including clothing.

    Restrictions

    Import licenses are required for commercial shipments. The following articles are not permitted in commercial shipments: articles of gold or silver, including tableware; pens and pencils ornamented with precious metal; calendar watches; linen clothing; natural silk goods; children's toys operated by steam or electricity; leather goods; coffee essences; and coffee substitutes; and molasses and sugar substitutes.

    Observations

    Customs declarations must show both the gross weight of the entire shipment and the net weight of each item in the shipment.
    Addressees are required to obtain special authorization to receive gift shipments that contain any articles that are considered "luxury or semi-luxury" items (e.g., various kinds of haberdashery, technical goods, foodstuffs, office supplies, cameras and projectors) by the Indonesian authorities.
    Gift shipments must be endorsed "Gift shipment - For the personal use of the addressee."
    Many articles are subject to an import license or special authorization by the Indonesian authorities. Therefore, senders should ascertain from the addressee before mailing whether the necessary documents are held.

    11b6r is correct; your worry is not importing an item into another country, IT IS EXPORTING FROM THE US. The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 (22 USC 2778) authorizes the US Dept of State to develop & maintain the United States Munitions List, which changes almost monthly. Just last year someone received a term in federal prison for exporting off-the-shelf optical sights to the wrong country.

    I hope that our friend Nunn doesn't ever get a visit from the fellas with the bulges in the cheap suits.
