577-450 Martini

Can anyone give me some load data for the 577-450 martini rifle using modern black powder subsitutes. I have a box of paper patched 450 gr, .466 dia lead bullets to reload and cases.

    Fill the case to the point where you will slightly compress the powder when you seat the bullet. As I recall I put around 70 grains of black powder in mine. This did not fill the case. Took 80 grains to fill it and recoil was brutal with 80 grains. Rule of thumb is case should be a minimum of 70% full of black powder or substitute to avoid problems. Hang on cause they kick like a mule. I suggest going to British Militaria Website for specific info. These guys know this cartridge and gun much beter than I do.

    Thanks for the reply on this, what type of filler, Years ago I used cornmeal for black powder compression. I'm sure there are better things now, again thankyou.

    There are potential problems with a filler in a tapered case. Cornmeal will work in a muzzle loader and maybe a straight wall case. There is a potential for it to act like an obstruction in a tapered case and cause high pressues and possibaly damage to the gun. I would check this out well before trying it. I have been told that you can have some air space in a blackpowder cartridge as long as the case is at least 70 to 75% full of powder.
