9mm vs 380 cal.

I recently bought a Bersa 380 cal. pistol.
Do both 380. caliber and/or 9 mm ammo
work or is one preferable over the other?
Are there differences between either in
terms of loads?
Your advice is appreciated.

    Go back and read what you just wrote.

    Sine the gun is .380 caliber ONLY .380 ammo should be used in it.

    Second read the book. In the book it will tell you ONLY .380 ammo should be used in it.

    The gun should also be stamped on the side and I am pretty sure that it will say .380 also.


    Yes there is a difference between them by a lot. Here is a list of different 9mm loadings, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_mm_caliber

    It is possible that you can get some "9mm" ammo such as 9x17mm Browning Short, .380 Auto, 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz but these are all just different names for the same round.

    If you are talking about 9mm Nato/Luger it is NOT the same round.

    9mm Para AKA 9mm Luger AKA 9x19
    While the bullet DIAMETER may be the same, the case length is quite a bit different. While a 380 may fit in a 9mm Luger chamber, it will be A) to short to fire reliably, and B) to weak to cycle the gun. The 9mm Luger will be to long to allow the 380 gun to close (if it will even fit into the magazine).

    Thanks for posting. I would hate to lose a new member. You have good advice all ready. As for the cal of choice, I much prefer the 9. My next step smaller is the .32 which, depending on the size of your target, could be less than a big threat!

    This comes up again and again.

    As mentioned 9mm luger (aka 9x19mm, 9mm parbellum) is a different cartridge than .380 ACP (aka 9x17 mm, 9mm corto, etc).

    They both use 9mm bullets, but they generally use bullets of different weights and they are absolutely NOT interchangeable.

    You probably wouldn't be able to get a 9mm luger round to even fit in the chamber of your .380 gun, and if you could you definitely would NOT want the thing to go off, since 9mm luger operates at MUCH higher pressure than .380 and this would be highly unsafe.

    By the way, as you have probably noticed, .380 ACP ammo is EXTREMELY scarce right now, and if you can find any, its probably really expensive, approaching $0.60 per round.

    Sorry. . .blame President Obama for supporting gun control and causing a run on ammo.
