Russian Nagant Muzzle Brake
I have a russian M44 Nagant type rifle. It kicks like a mule. I want to buy one of the clamp on muzzle brakes. Unfortunately I read dozens of posts saying that they don't stick. Get shot off in just a hundred rounds. I wrote a supplier who says they shoot off due to crooked installation, which makes sense. Does anyone have hands on experience with one that lasted for more than 100 rounds?

Clamp on brakes will shake loose on any high powered rifle or medium powered rifle like the 7.62x39 SKS.
Either thread one on or press one on and cross pin it.

I've been looking into the exact same thing myself, actually. If you want this to work well, thread the barrel then put on a proper muzzle brake. I've heard AK types will fit.
I do have two other "poor mans" suggestions.
Supposedly, a clamp-on muzzle break from an M1 carbine will fit on the Mosin, and that ought to be a bit more resistant to flying off than one of those set-screw jobs.
I have no idea how well this actually works in terms of taming recoil, but I bet it reduces muzzle flip a bit. Could be worth a shot.
Also, its not exactly a muzzle brake, but if recoil is the issue, one of these is a total no-brainer (also helps increase pull length, which is good). I'd do that first.0 -
When I was in the Army, I stripped all the unnecessary metal from a 30-06 depot converted Jap rifle and shortened the barrel. We had a mobile machine shop on a deuce and a half and I had an Ordnance shop truck.
A ramp was built up on the bolt with weld to convert to cocking on opening and the bolt was cut off and welded Mannlicher style to clear an Army Weaver 330 scope on a Redfield Jr mount.
The rifle shot 30-06 M1 ball very accurately but kicked like hell, being so light.
I cut a M-2 Carbine muzzle brake off from the strap and had both the rifle barrel and chopped muzzle brake threaded.
This Rube Goldberg arrangement worked very well and I carried it up some pretty steep "half day climb" mountains in Korea. It beat an M1 or Carbine for the purpose.
Today those Carbine brakes are collectibles but I had a deuce and a half plus a trailer full of free parts and captured goodies.0 -
I read those articles also but could not help myself and ordered a couple off ebay made for the m44...............fit perfect on an m38 also got that ten dollar recoil pad shown above.......results= my m38 is a ice cream cat and even my vary recoil sensitive wife won't stop shooting it. hundreds of rounds down it since no problem........ however one of my 91/30s is to large diameter for a proper fit and my other 91/30 is to small for a proper fit. I say get the brake and the recoil pad and only use the brake if it fits tour barrel PERFECT. they are cheap so try it but do not push your luck if it does not fit properly.....good luck and be safe. 0
