    I have a Winchester Model 88 with a 4 digit serial number. What year would this be from?

    You have a first year of production, which is 1955. The 1955 year began with S/N 1 and ended with 18,378. I don't know what month of 1955 that Winchester began production of the wonderful Model-88, however, 18,378 divided by 12 (months) results in 1531.5 rifles per month. Perhaps a little research in a book on Winchester rifles would bring to light the actual month that production began. Congratulations on owning a fine rifle. I also have a M-88 in .308 Win, as well as a M-100 in .308 Win.

    Actually the first Model 88 was the serial #4...Number of guns produced in 1955 were almost 36,000.. I'm sure we will here from someone who wants to argue about this.....

    Well, hidebuyer, I got the figures for Model-88 production from the book, "Winchester Dates of Manufacture", published by Art and Reference House, Brownsboro, Texas. It has two printing dates inside, 1981 and 1984. What is the source of the higher production number that you have? Is my copy of the book out of date because of new information?

    I have a model 88 in 308 with a 5,000 serial number, I've never pinned down the month, all I know is 1955. Let me know what you find.

    I got my information from the book "THE EIGHTY EIGHT" written by Douglas Murray. This man put alot of time and research into this book.
    It would make a good investment for the eighty eight collector.
