ruger gp100 problem

Am having a problem with a ruger gp100 6" barrel in .357. We cannot seem to get tight groups out of this gun. At 20 feet the best seems to be 3" group. The hottest loads seem to help a bit. We have changed the springs to reduce trigget pull. The groups are over the board not left or right or up or down. It is almost like the bullets are bouncing around in the barrel. This .357 is nearly new and has been shot very little. Any ideas to help out? Thanks

    Dear Doctor,

    For a S-- A-- reply, My first impulse was "physician, heal thy-self"

    On the serious side, measure (snap gauge & mike) the throats of each chamber in your cylinder. If there is .001 difference or less, shoot bullets sized to the largest hole.

    If your chamber throats check OK, check timing with a range rod (aval. from Brownell's)

    If the above checks reveal the problem & it is one you can compensate for/live with, GREAT! If not, send the gun back to Ruger with a note "It's BUSTED, please fix"

    Is there one or two flyers?

    When checking out a revolver, I would mark and then shoot 3 or 4 shots out of each chamber separately to see how consistant each chamber is.

    If all the chambers are shooting spreads like your original group, I would think it most likely the barrel, or the shooter.

    You could also slug the bore to see if it is oversized.

    Your GP100 needs some break-in. Dry fire the snot out of it while your wife is watching her favorite TV show. Dry fire it while you're having your morning coffee. Dry fire it while you're in the library. Run 1000-2000 rounds through it.

    Doc, Does it shoot that way for everyone or just you? You don't state if youv'e had others shoot it. If it shoots like that for anyone using it I would send it back to Ruger to have them check it. You can spend a lot of time trying this and measuring that, but they are the experts. Not to mention that they are an outstanding company that stands behind every product they sell. Send it to them along with a cover letter explainig your issues, you can ship it to them directly yourself(UPS). They will get to the bottom of the problem and resolve it one way or another.     Have you tried different bullet weights as well? Also just don't box up the gun and send it back without calling Ruger first because they will give you a Repair Order number and you may be able to get them to use their ups account for shipping if the gun is new, otherwise you would have pay for shipping if it's an older used gun and that can be expensive if you don't have a FFL. Any chance the bore is just dirty/leaded up?

    Here are a few more facts. The gun is 3 years old but rearly fired. I would say in a group of 6 there are always a couple of flyers. And yes many have shot this gun and no one I know can group this gun. Lastly, As the gun heats up from firing the groupings tend to be better. Thanks for all the reponses so far.

    Have a gunsmith run a .357 try rod down the barrel from the muzzle to see if all the chambers are properly aligning with the bore. I'm sure you are aware that Ruger's reputation is (or was) based on durability and reliability, not accuracy.

    have you cleaned weapon yet ?---Is there any rifling in the barrel ?
