Just One Luger?????

OK, so if I had the bucks and wanted to buy just one Luger to have and to hold and which WILL appreciate in value, what should I look for? Military, commercial, .30 cal or 9mm, 4" barrel or longer, WWI or WWII, etc? I will appreciate your advice and will let you all know what happens. Thanks in advance!

    1916 or 1917 navy This has 6 inch barrel and two position rear sight. Hands Down. Only down side is like all Lugers if you have one in great condition with all matching numbers you have to ask yourself DO YOU WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE and shoot it . I sold my two Navies and 1902 Carbine last year because I like to shoot my guns.

    2.Numbers all matching
    3.Matching serialized magazine, or if not, at least period correct [need Luger book to confirm]
    4.Period correct holster w/accessories (see item 1-condition)
    5.Provenance (captured property authorization)
    6.Numbers produced [need Luger book]
    7.Not often encountered markings/Manufacturer stampings [need Luger book]
    8.Matching serialized shoulder stock (yes, P-08 Lugers had them) with straps
    9.Getting back to us with good, in-focus photos so the Gunbroker Impremateur* can be issued[:D]

    You will be told of quite a few rare variants. If dilligent, you can aquire one of the models suggested. Please keep in mind my "genric" guidelines, however during the selection process. Best, Joe

    An S42 marked WW2 9mm P-08 in NRA excellent condition.
    It will be finely finished as Lugers go and not break parts when it's shot.
    Luger pistols have design faults that prevented their adoption by the US Army but are very accurate and will never wear out.
    The 4" Luger in 30 cal is feeble ballistically but in 6" can be handloaded to do long range (for a pistol) prarie dog shooting.

    ALL Parabellums appreciate in value. That said, WWII Mauser made (coded byf, S42, or just 42) Parabellums will always be in demand. They are all military and in 9mm and were the best made of the type.
    All things being considered if you have a choice, go for a 1942 byf with P.08 on the left side of the frame. This was the last year of German military procurement. From then on Mauserwerk produced only the P.38.

    Whichever one you choose, make sure that parts and finish are original and in as near 100% original condition as possible. Be sure and have an expert examine the finish. The ignorant or dishonest can't be depended on when they say "original finish".

    Herschel beat me to it.

    I have a friend who started the same quest for "just one" Luger, & I took him to gun shows & gun shops for a year before he developed "an eye" for parts & finishes. Most of those you see offered have "problems", & you WILL get fleeced if you don't do research & have someone to help you.

    There are a few gun show dealers who specialize in Lugers & have a quantity in stock. I have found these guys to be quite helpful, often pointing out the differences on guns they have displayed.
