Mosin Carbine Barrel

OK, I did a search here and found a few suggestions but I'm thinking I don't want to do this job myself. Can anyone suggest a gunsmith the will remove my barrel?

    Just about any competent rifle smith should be able to do that (as opposed to a parts replacer)

    You need a BIG vise, blocks to support and hold the receiver, and a barrel wrench (my smith uses one about 4 ft long!) along with headspace gauges, and maybe a lathe to set the barrel back a thread (getting things lined up, like sights on TOP when assembled)

    You may want to check the "find a ffl feature" and see which of them in your area are smiths. Know a couple in the Richmond VA area, but not sure where you are. Just had my smith replace a 20 gauge pump barrel, with a rib that had to line up w/ receiver- cost me $30.

    Before you go find a gunsmith, you might consider that entire Mosin barreled actions are available for under $50. and they ought to drop right into whatever stock you've got.

    (You can then recoup at least part of it selling your old action).

    Worth thinking about, since I don't think you're going to get anyone to replace a Mosin barrel on your gun for less than that.

    dude, i just picked up a like new 91/30 today at a show for $75. i never knew a nagant was worth working on? just get another one!

    Well, most of the "like new" Mosin 91/30s around now only look "like new" on the outside, because they were arsenal refurbished. Virtually all of them have corroded bores, either dark, pitted, or worse.

    But if you can find one with a good bore, sure, that's a heck of a lot better than trying to rebarrel an older one.

    Also, prices on these have gone up over the last year. While I have no doubt that you can still find some of them out there for $75, in general, prices are now hovering around $125 for the re-arsenalled ones.

    I guess I should have added more detail. I want to shorten the barrel, recrown, install, and check headspace. I don't need anymore Mosins.

    Got it, but for less than the cost of paying a gunsmith to do all that, you can probably find a gun with a short barrel, decent crown, etc.

    I hate to say it, but if you were inclined to do it yourself, beat up Mosins are cheap enough that one would make a good gun to practice on. If you were to only cut off 1/2" at a time, and recrown each time, by the time you got down to a 20" bbl, you'd probably be pretty good at it! [;)]
