Ruger Mini 14 Retro-Fit?
I was hoping someone might know if a new 2009 serial 580+ Ruger Mini 14 .223 would fit into an older serial 181+ wooden stock with wooden handguard without too much modification? Thank You...RG

Wood hand guards were 180 series... 181+ used the plastic one.
180 and 181+ aren't compatible, so I don't think the new ones and the 180 would be.
Possibly on the 181, but you'd have to try it.... I'd check the website of a popular stock maker like Choate, etc. and see what they says fits their stocks...
You may be able to make a wood handguard fit, but I think the metal hardware underneath it is different. So possibly by replacign the metal, etc.0 -
Thank You iwannausername, I'm kinda playing around a bit, I really like the looks of the older mini's with the wood stock and wooden handguard, but my new 580+ mini shoots way-way tighter groups, if the rifle would fit into a 181+ plus stock it probably wouldn't take much to get a wooden handguard to fit with that stock, what do you think?

If your mini configuration is giving you " way-way tighter groups" I wouldn't tinker with it.
I have a composite stock , which really makes little difference to me. I just want decent groups.0 -
my 181 series came with and has a wood handguard. don't know if it would fit the new series though, Bob 0 -
My mini-14, serial 182-15xxx manufactured in 1980, stainless, has a light blond stock with a matching wooden handguard. Been that way since I acquired it, always thought it came that way new since I've had it for 20 plus years. So, there may be others out there with wooden handguards.
My ranch rifle, blued, circa 1987, came new with a blued steel handguard but I never tried to swap them and have since sold the rifle.
I was recently looking at a metal handguard on GB but it looked as if it wouldn't fit and I passed on it. I know there are differences between pre 1977 manufacture and post 1977 but didn't know it extended to the hand guard configuration.

I've actually talked to a few people that say the 181+ serial number rifle stocks will interchange with all the newer models except the target model. Also the part numbers from ruger for the "Handguard Liner" inside the handguards are the same part number for the wooden ones as the newer model serial number 580+... So I think I should be able to swap my "2009" Stainless mini right into a Retro all "Wooden stock & Handguard" Which I think is a much better looking set-up. So much so that I just bought a Beautiful Light Blond 188 serial stock and wooden handguard...I'll send pics after I get it put together, Hopefully if all is done right it won't sacrifice any accuracy at all. A little off topic, but I've seen some M1A ventilated handguards modified to work on the Mini. Not sure how it's done, other than having to rivet the Mini barrel clamp to the M1A handguard for starters. 0 -
Just to let everyone know it fits, small modify, no big deal, took out about 1/4" X 1/4" X 2" strip of wood from inside the magazine well and it fits like a glove. And it looks beautiful, wish I could upload a picture, maybe later...Thanks Guys...RG PS. The wooden handguard snapped right on the newer 2009 mini 14 tapered barrel, no modification what-so-ever

I too have a 580 series Mini, it hasa Tapco stock on it now but I am wanting a wood stock.
What all do I need to make it work....the one in the above pic looks AWESOME !!!0 -
