    I've noticed H&R has offerd S&W 50Cal in Their Rifles. Does the ballistics improve in a Rifel and what would be a ideal length

    Ballistics ought to be better from a rifle.

    How much? I don't know.

    Usually rifle barrels add about 50-75 fps per inch to pistol rounds, with maximum velocity topping out about 16-18".

    Which length is "best" depends a bit on what you want to do.

    In general, with pistol rounds, you don't get much ballistic advantage over carbine length barrels, but there could be other reasons you might prefer a slightly longer one.

    For example, even if it doesn't really add any more velocity, a longer barrel could be better for increased sight radius, if you're using iron sights. Longer barrels usually also reduce muzzle blast and flash, and that could be an advantage, etc.

    Beantownshootah Thanks so much I'm new to this forum and getting a late start on the new ballistics. For some reason the heavier bullit intrigues me but the dichotomy of long range shooting does as well. Your data has been most helpful. Thanks Stan
