7mm-08 opps...
i recently lent my 7mm-08 to a friend and they stated that they accidently sent a 308 down the barrel. is the barrel now junk , i do not see any crack, or splits and he claimed that it still shoot straight.

Is it even possible to get a 308 to chamber in a 7-08?
I mean the neck diameter on factory 7-08 ammo is .309-.310, while on the 308 it's .335-.338.
More likely he fired a handload, or factory mistake, that used a 308 case that had been necked down to 7-08 dimensions (but still carried the 308 headstamp)
IF he did manage to get a 308 to chamber and fire, I doubt he would have been able determine that "it still shoots straight"0 -

IF he got a .308 to fit and fire, it should be easy to tell if the gun
is still good. First, pick up the bolt off the floor and see if all the locking lugs are there. Then look at both halves of the barrel to see
if the rifled bore could be welded back together. The magazine box should now be good to use for 45/70 or 50/110 sharps ammo. You may have to get used to the new two stage trigger...3lbs then 55 lbs to fire....[:)]0 -
Actually I think a 308 bullet could be squeezed down the barrel without major damage but I would certainly have a gunsmith checkout the whole gun as it would have been a strain on the whole gun. 308 to 288 would have shaved a lot of brass and lead in the barrel. 0 -
A .308 bullet can certainly be squeezed down a 7mm bore. (at considerable pressure) What I would consider a near impossibility would be to get a .308 cartridge to chamber in a 7.08 in the first place.
Something like a 308 in a .270 chamber, maybe, but 308 in 7-08? Like the man said, either handload or mislabeled brass from factory. I suppose if you took a sledge hammer to the bolt handle you might drive the bullet back into the case and resize the neck, but then you're back to the "picking up all the pieces" scenario.

Like you have said i first thought that the guy was B/S ing but had the flatten out 308 brass to prove it...i loved the rifle, not enought not to let him use it but do i dare shot it again or risk trading it and the un-knowing buyer shoots it... 0 -

As the saying goes, "when all else fails, brute force & ignorance will prevail!"
It is highly unlikely they actually got a 308 chambered, let alone fired. BUT - - to be safe, take it to a gunsmith for a checkup. Ask about die-check or magna-flux to be sure nothing is cracked. If head space is OK & no cracks, you are good to go.

You and your buddy need to put your heads together to figure out what really happened because you can't chamber a .308 Win. cartridge in a 7mm-08 chamber. If you can, you HAD more serious problems than you were aware of from the beginning.
If you can't figure it out, get a gunsmith involved and quit shooting.
