why not a 22?
looking for an easy conceal /carry ,many people say a 22 is too small for the job .So I ask why is it too small ,I figure it will stop and turn someone away so I can get away without worrying about the bullet going through the wall and hitting another person or whatever ,ammo is fairly cheap ect .what do you think? thank you ED

22's have certainly killed a lot of people many of them because people do not repect firearms. A 22LR will kill just as anything else will if put in the right place, but with lower energy than other rounds makes little room for error. The last thing I persoally want is if I make a bad shot the target is none the least slowed down. 0 -
I think a J frame Smith & Wesson in 38 Special is just as easy to conceal as a J frame Smith & Wesson in 22 lr. So unless you're going to one of the micro mini NAA revolvers or maybe some sort of derringer the 22 lr chambering doesn't offer better concealment.
Keeping in mind that I really don't want to be shot by anything and a 22 can certainly stop & kill, a JHP in 38 Special doesn't have tremendous penetration and should remain in whomever is struck and is a significantly better defensive choice. As is the 9mm, 9X18 and 380 for that matter.
Pointing a 22 at someone, even shooting them with it would seem reasonable to believe they'd go away. But often times folks who are doing something worthy of being shot can be a bit less than reasonable, hittin a fly with a hammer is not such a bad thing in those instances, I think.0 -
While there is no dispute about the ability of the .22 to kill it is an issue of how quickly. The more energy you can put on your target the more effectively and faster it SHOULD stop the target. I know there are all kinds of variables and "I heard one time......." things, but in general this is the case.

Here are some generic numbers
.22 from a rifle 100 flb (foot pounds)
9mm pistol 350 flb
.357 mag pistol 550 flb
.45 pistol 400 flb
Just for fun the .500 SW is 2600 flb
Again these are kind generic numbers. If you know the weight and speed of your bullet you can punch it into a energy calculator and find out exactly what i yours is. Plus there is also different types of bullets that can cause more damage then others.
Many other guns are not much if any bigger then the .22 so it should not be an issue of size. If the .22 is the biggest gun you can afford, afford to shoot, can shoot well, will carry then it may be the best choice for you.0 -
placed against your occipital lobe it will get the job done alright. In a fire fight with Jaimacian drug dealers, I would rather be a little better prepared. Personally I am looking for a one shot stop. 0 -
thank you all for replying, there are so many to choose from my head starts spinning ,owning a ruger that jams I am more inclined to get a revolver ,someone mentioned to me one time that a 357 is really 2 guns for the price of one ,good point .charter arms is my price range unless I find that once in a lifetime deal or someone croaks,maybe a taurus 0 -

The .22 has probably killed more people than any other round.
I have seen a dozen people killed with a single torso hit from a .22
If I were shy of recoil I would not hesitate to carry a .22 for self defense.
As a civilian, in almost all cases where you would need to shoot, the assailant does not know that you were armed.
If they knew you were armed, they would pick on someone else.
Criminals know something that some ballistics experts don't know, a single shot from any gun can kill you.
So, if you pulled nothing more than a HiStandard 2 shot .22 lr derringer, you would have turned the tables big time on the bad guy, and there is a good chance you would kill him.
But, I would prefer something with a little more punch.
Hard to beat a little 5 shot .38 revolver.0 -
The BEST carry gun is ANY gun you have in your hand when the s..t hits the fan. I carry two basic guns...a 1911 style .45acp or a Phoenix .22
auto. Depends on situation or clothing or "threat" level. With either one, I assure you if I need to pull it out, I am not going to be the "second place winner". If you carry a .22, make sure it functions 100%...all the time...and practice, practice, practice. A good hit with a .22 beats a miss with a 185 grain Hydra-shok. And if your .22 runs 100% with the 60 grain Aqulia sniper bullets, they are far better than the numbers tell, to stop any arguments. JMHO Bob0 -
Just remember a dead man tells no tails. It's your word against a dead man. You will win everytime. So if you have to shoot make it count. I carry a 38 taurus ultralite. Not to expensive and comfortable to carry. It is 5 shots almost 100% guaranteed. 0 -
Because it doesn't have the "hit 'em anywhere and let them know they've been hit," power.
While it, as well as many other lesser powered rounds, have the ability to kill, it just doesn't impart enough energy to stop someone in the worst case scenario. As noted most criminals don't want to get shot regardless. But if it comes down to getting shot or taking you out if they are close enough they will continue to take you out if hit with a .22 in a non-lethal area. We'd all certainly like to hit a lethal area if the situation comes upon us. but a round that does a better job of incapacitation in the "up close, personal confrontation" is the one I would choose to defend myself with. I would choose a .45 or a .40. I've used mine enough that I know their fit and feel and how each comes out of a well adjustec holster.0
