I HAVE INHERITED A HENRY ARMS 12 GAGE DBL BARREL SHOTGUN AND WAS TOLD IT IS A RARE SHOTGUN AND SHOULD HAVE IT INSURED. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT A CLOSE VALUE OF IT WOULD BE. I WOULD SAY IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND HAS SOME STOCK SCRTCHES AND A LITTLE BLUEING OFF .

    I hate it when someone who knows nothing about old shotguns starts making value judgments. I have two listings for the name Henry Arms Company, Just Henry Arms Co and Henry Arms Co Twist Finish Belgium 1898. All are "Trade Brand Name" shotguns. A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker for and was sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. Under the Henry Arms Co name the guns were made in both Belgium and America, Belgium-- Anciens Establissment Pieper and F. Dumoulin & Co both of Leige,Belgium and America--Crescent Fire Arms Co of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1932). Under the name Henry Arms Co Twist Finish Belgium 1898, the gun was made in Belgium by Anciens Establissment Pieper. All the guns were either imported and sold by the H & D Folsome Company of New York City. The Belgian made guns can be identified by removing the forearm and looking for proof marks on the bottom of the barrels. Belgian made guns will have the letters "ELG" in an oval with a crown over that stamped there. The American made gun will have nothing.
    Value? The value of an old shotgun depends on the condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the wood and metal as well as the mechanical condition. An example in pristine condition that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might go for as much as $200. A rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk fit for a tomato stake might bring $10.00 for parts. None of them is going to pay for your retirement. All of these guns were made sometime between 1890 and 1914 and were designed for the ammunition in use at the time which was black powder or early low pressure smokeless powder. The Belgian made guns will have damascus barrels. They will also have short chambers instead of the modern 3" chambers. My advice is don't try to shoot it. Sorry for the long disseration but I'm not in a good mood right now.
