H&R M1 Garand

I have a like new H&R M1 Garand that has A4 and 2-65 engraved on the right side of the mag well. Called CMP and they told me it was rebuilt at Augusta armory. Does anyone have any info on this armory and the work they did. TIA Frank

    Augusta Armory was a US Federal facility. The services sent their small arms to them for repair/upgrade, with the intent of immediate release to troops, or storage. The firearm would have to meet, or exceed "as new" condition before the firearm would be cleared for release to troops.

    Assuming the gun is as it left the armory, you should be good to go. Best, Joe

    Well, I didn't "get" my post info per se. Yes, there must be a general order from the Quartermaster Corps archived somewhere stating the authorization to proceed with equipment reconditioning/storage. That's the bottom line on an arsenal's "authority". However, it's beyond my ken.

    If you need to know just what the armorers did, I suggest getting ahold of division level, (or corps level) M1 Garand armorers manuals. No way to tell if what's in the manual actually occured to your rifle, as there's no way to know what items were worn/broken when your particular rifle was surrendered to arsenal for storage.

    Note: I think you would be best served getting a few excellent books on the M1..available through www.fulton-armory.com as they focus on the single rifle owner/user. Edit to add: The "civilian" books will also show you what trouble spots to concentrate on, and (with gauges) what's worn, and what's not. Thus you will see just how the armorers inspected your rifle prior to any work, if needed.

    The data engraved on the receiver indicates that the rifle was rebuilt. That is, it was completely taken apart & reassembled from new &/or used parts. It's possible that the only "original" part of your rifle is the receiver, but I can't see from here.

    M1 rifles fresh from arsenal rebuild are considered semi-collectible, as they have been assembled by expert armorers with the best quality parts. That's especially true for those done in the 1960's.
