Winchester Model 12 mechanic needed

I just purchased a Winchester Model 12 on GB. The gun is an older nickel steel model. The gun works fine except for one thing.

When the gun is assembled, (barrel properly attached to the receiver), the magazine tube can be turned about 10 to 15 degrees and the witness arrow no longer lines-up with the arrow on the receiver extension and the action binds-up. If I turn the magazine tube and line-up the arrows, the action functions perfectly.
Serial numbers on the forend and receiver match.

What's my problem?

    Good Morning Taperloc. It sounds to me like you have an issue with the magazine locking pin or possibly the mag tube itself. Disassemble and check for wear.

    Reluctant to call myself an "expert" but I do have a few of these and finding someone who can actually fix one is becoming a chore.
    That said: Are you certain the mag tube is in seated all the way into the reciever when you turn it to lock in??

    How are the threads on the end of the tube / in the receiver? Worn / buggered??

    Have you tried a different mag tube??

    Answers to these may help move us forward.

    Hello all,
    I guess I screwed-up. I had removed the magazine plug, then removed the spring and follower. I cleaned and lightly oiled the inside of the magazine tube, spring and follower, wiping off any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth. It seems like a very straight forward operation, so I just re-assembled it. That is when the problem started.

    Yesterday, I disassembled it again, but this time, I consulted my firearms assembly handbook for assembly. I cleaned the threads in the receiver with a brass "tooth brush" and oiled both sets of threads. Everything looked very good.

    The assembly manual stated to use a drift pin in the magazine plug hole where the magazine lock pin goes. Install the magazine plug screws and removed the drift pin and install the locking pin.

    I don't know for sure why it worked, but it did and now the magazine tube lines-up correctly and no longer turns when assembled as it did before.

    Taperloc, glad to hear the problem is solved. I hate manuals too, but they can be the difference as we have found out today, even if we don't fully understand them.
