S&W Model 1955 25-2 .45ACP
I just bought this gun and I want to make sure it is ok to shoot it without the little EZ loader clip (i.e. the little metal ring that clips the rounds into it for quick loading) on the rounds. I assume the little "clip" is just a device to make for faster reloading?

P.S. I found out today it doesn't like shooting the CCI 45 Auto Shotshells at all. Does anyone have a suggetion on a shot shell for this gun? 0 -
You need to have some "MOON" clips for the gun. They make for much easier loading and unloading. Get a mooon clip unloader also. 0 -

The S&W 1955 is chambered for the 45ACP & will not eject the fired shells without a "clip".
Your M1955 head spaces on the forward case mouth beings it is chambered for a rimless case. The 1/2 moon (3 round) or full moon (6 round) clips make loading quicker plus enable you to eject the empties without having to punch them out one at a time with a pencil or similar dowell.
The 45 auto rim case is made for 45ACP revolvers. The thick rim is the same as the ACP rim plus the clip. The use of auto rim cases is interchangable with the ACP loads & lets you eject empties with the ejector rod.
It is safe to use standard 45ACP ammo without the clips, but unloading & reloading is slower. In short, it's your choice, with clips, without clips, or 45 auto rim, they all work for your revolver.
No rifled barrel will shoot a shot shell well. MAX range will be 10 feet. The rifling spins the shot charge & once outside the barrel, centrifucal force takes over & the pattern opens QUICK!

Its not just to make for faster reloading, but also to make for practical ejection.
As mentioned, you don't need the moon clips (that's what they're called) to fire the gun safely.
The problem is that without them unloading the gun becomes slower as you have to poke out each empty cartridge one at a time with a pencil or such.0 -

With practice you will find that you can keep up with the auto shooters when it comes to doing a re-load.
Many auto shooters will "tweak" their magwells/releases, but in your case, you don't have to make any alterations! Best, Joe0 -
I have several Smith revolvers in .45 ACP, a couple model 1955's and a 625. I use moon clips for competition, but for informal plinking I shoot the rounds loose without clips.
When you factor in the time spent loading the rounds into the clips and later removing them after shooting, its easier for me to just shoot without clips. The brass is pretty easy to get out of the cylinder with your fingers.
If your going to carry such a revolver for protection full moon clips are the way to go, they are better than speedy loaders.0 -
If you want to take up reloading, you can use 45 AR (auto rim) cases and not have to use the ACP cases or clips. I'll take advantage of some cheap ACP ammo from time to time, but for target shooting I use the AR case and a Penn 225 grain full wadcutter bullet. 0
