Smith model 15-3 , how old ?

I have my Dads S&W model 15-3 Combat Masterpiece that was his 2nd service revolver,well this weekend i found the box and some paper work but not anything with a date on it.The packing list had 1 Sam Browne (thats how they spelled it)Defender Set Size 36 and 1 Model 15 Revolver,Combat Masterpiece,4" Barrel,Nickel but no date.The box has S&W K38 Combat Masterpiece Revolver Mod. 15-3, Fin N,Barrel 4", Stock S,INS V,PKR 2,Ser # K 8347xx.Im thinking he got it around 1967 would that be about right for the ser.# ? It is in great shape,few dings on the grips from getting in the car but even to get it refinished in Nickel was only like $ 10.00 according to some paper work in the box,but no information on the cost of the Gun at the time.
