Model 70 Winchester Pre 64 Super Grade

What does super grade mean exactly? I have a pre 64 super grade in 270. I looked around in the search and cannot find a definition or specification. Every one here uses the term as a common understood meaning. somebody help a novice out ,please.

    Super grade means add 100%. The super grade 70 pre 64 gun was the cream of the crop model 70. It had a cheek piece, upgraded checkering, ebony fore end, inletted swivels, and super grade stamped on the mag. floor plate.

    Sort of like the difference between a Rem 700 BDL and ADL, plus some.

    Back in the early 1990s I took my father's M-70 Super Grade (built in 1957) to a gun shop to consult with them about the old Redfield sight bases. When I opened the gun case the owner of the shop stood there in silence, looking. He asked me if it would be alright to call his sales staff together to look at the rifle. I told him that would be fine. He called the guys together, and he then put on cotton gloves, picked up the rifle, and began explaining to his staff (about 4 or 5 guys) how to recognize a Super Grade, and what to look out for. He explained that some nere do wells have had the floor plates engraved with the Super Grade words, and they have tried to pass off those M-70s as real Super Grades. After he was finished with the instructional period he returned the rifle to the gun case, and then we got down to business regarding the Redfield bases. It was impressive to see the high regard and care shown by the owner of that shop. My father, now deceased, would have been proud to see that.

    Yes, a M-70 Super Grade is the Cadillac version of the M-70 Chevrolet. If your Super Grade is in very good condition, my advice is for you to oil it and put it away in the gun safe. I would not advise using it for hunting. A Super in very good condition should not be abused, and should be conserved. They are not made anymore, and the price will hold or increase, but any handling dings and abuse will drive the price down. If you need a hunting rifle, buya new Savage at Walmart for $450. You could take $450 value out of the Super Grade just by dinging it on a hunt for deer in the brush.
