scope tube touch up

guys/gals. Have you ever had a scope that the enamel covering was scratched off from a scope ring or fumbling hands? What did you cover the scratch with? Were you able to buff it out to make it unnoticeable, or nearly so? This thread sort of follows the other one I have. I am looking at buying a used Zeiss scope that needs some tlc outside. Please advise.

can a scope be repainted?

    Since most scope tubes these days are aluminum, I would say that the finish is a hardcoat anodizing that most use. I would check for the finnish you are looking for at www.Brownells.com. I am not sure if it is worth the time and effort though, as it could turn out worse.

    I thought you might say that. haven't bought the scope. Just curious. Have you ever had any luck buffing out ring marks?

    Ring marks are different then scratches. In the case of small scratches I'll generally use an indeluable black marking pen and black it out. Ring marks I'd probably try oil and a polishing cloth on. The lighter marks would probably rub out. Still rings generally cover old marks unless the action you will be using it on is of a very different length. Have you tried contacting the factory to see if they offer a refinish job?

    You could always buff the whold thing out with sttel wool and flat black it. I just did this on an old Kahles looks great and no shine. [:0]

    haven't contacted them yet. taking all the information I can in, from the forum. I appreciate you fellas helping me on this one.

    Sharpie but I dont have any gloss finish scopes.

    Birchwood Casey makes specific markers to touch up guns/ scopes. They work pretty good.

    Black sharpie, then forget about it.

    Works fine to cover ordinary scratches.
