Marlin 39a Mountie value

Hi:

My dad bought me a Marlin .22 model 39a Mountie when I was 12... in `53. This gun I longed for... salivated over the pictures of it on the back of magazines and pestered my dad until he caved. But, when money was short, I sold it to a friend. I have longed again for that gun. He is dead now and his son gave the gun to his friend. Now I think I have located it. He wants $500 for it. Is this a fair price?

    It depends on condition. This one sold recently for $380:

    You obviously have sentimental value attached to it and I hope your friend's son is not taking advantage of you for that.

    The mountie is in greater demand than the 39A with the pistol grip stock and longer barrel. If the gun looks new the price is reasonable. If I were in your shoes I would buy it. In April I paid $425 for a like new Golden Anniversary 39A. It had an octagon barrel, brass buttplate and straight stock. I thought a got a very good buy.

    That was my first gun purchase in 1955. I worked all summer to earn enough money to buy it ($62.50). I still have it and shoot it almost every day. Never had a problem with it and it is very accurate. Being that it was your first gun, there should be a lot of sentiment with it (aas is mine) and only you would know what that is worth. If it is in any kind of good condition I would go-for-it.

    A few months ago, I gave $450 for a 1973 production and I thought it was a fair price. $500 doesn't seem out of line to me.

    +1 for Heliman!! The 39A and M with 20" barrel are underpriced by Blue book. They are great little carbines that will appreciate in the next 5 years!
