Primer Expiration
Someone told me today that the government is requiring ammunition manufacturers to make primers that expire (will not fire after a length of time) to prevent gun owners and enthusiasts from stock piling ammo.
Is there any truth to this? And if it waqs true, wouldn't it be required that an expiration date be printed on the boxes?

I've never heard of any such law, nor have I ever heard of any such bill even being proposed.
Any ammo maker that tried such a thing would open themselves up to major liability after someone who wanted to hear a "bang" heard a "click" instead.
I'm not even sure there is any way to make primers RELIABLY degrade over a set period of time. They're not alarm clocks!
At some point between "working reliably" and "not working at all" there would be an inbetween where the primers would only partially ignite, potentially leading to incomplete powder ignition and potentially dangerous hang-fires.
So I while I would never underestimate the ability/desire of stupid politicians to push for ever stupider laws restricting guns and ammo, I just don't see this one.0 -

Just because it's not technically or commercially feasible, wouldn't preclude politicians from passing laws. Understanding how things actually work is not a requirement to be a politician.0 -
This is BS; however I have seen at least one guy selling primers at auction who "quotes" this myth in his ad; I assume to make potential buyers think that his "old" primers are worth more. Fortunately, the chemistry of explosives precludes producing priming compounds with a fixed shelf life. This myth is fairly widespread and probably contributes to the present lack of primers in the supply chain. On a bright note, Midway had Winchester LRP in stock at the regular price for about 4 hours yesterday and they placed a 5,000 primer limit on orders-this is a good idea because it prevents a small number of people from buying all of the primers just to sell them at inflated prices. 0 -
However, Tulsa-Bill, I commend you for not propagating such a rumor..and instead coming to the correct venue to find out. I wish more would do their homework, such as you have done!

Just another case of scare tactics. I don't know if they could make a primer expire. I/m still shooting with primers that were bought in 1974, with zero failures! Oh yeah, they were $10 a thousand in '74. 0 -
I am using primer that are so old that despite being marked "Kleanbore", they are hand stamped "non-mercuric". The trays are made of wood rather than plastic. I have yet to experience a misfire. 0 -
