Put a FL guide rod in P13, now slide won't lock

I put an Ed Brown full length, 2-piece guide rod and plug in my gun and now it feels like the spring is too long. Feels like it's compressed all the way down solid, but the slide won't go far enough back to lock open. What to do? Do I need to cut the spring down?

  If you change a part from a working gun and now it no longer works the fault is with the new part you attempted to in stall NOT any other original parts. Why did you think you needed a full length guide rod & what did you think would be the advantage of this modification would be on your factory original configurations[?][?]

  If John Moses Browning thought the 1911 needed a full length guide rod, he would have designed it that way![;)]

  I guess I wanted it for whatever tiny bit of ballast it might provide against muzzle-flip. Never really believed spring binding was or ever would be a problem. I didn't realize these were so frowned upon.
