frount sight sucks
I have an 1892 wen. mod.92 with a frount sight that flips up or down to expose 2 differant sight pictures. One is low and one is high with ivory bead. Can anyone tell me if this was a standerd fiture for wen.and what was the idea behind this design.I see it as a problum in several ways and have chosen to change it to a blade sight.Any thoughts on this? thanks

I don't know beans about the sight you describe. But on the off chance that it's Winchester factory original? Don't remove it until a Winchester pro chimes in with a opinion. It would make the rifle more valuable by leaving it on, if it's factory original. 0 -
The rear sight on many modern combat rifles also has two different apertures that can flip. One for close range, one for far.
The idea here is probably similar, with the ivory bead also intended to increase visibility against a dark background.
Ultimately, its up to you to set up the gun so that you can shoot it effectively.
Rufe's point about collectibility is good. I don't know how your flippable front sight is held in place, but if its easily restored to the way it was when you got it, then this shouldn't be a big issue. Just restore the original sight before you sell the gun.
Edit: So if you're not ever going to sell it, and you hate the front sight, then change it. What's the problem? [;)] Sights and trigger are probably the two most important things on ANY gun, so if you know you are going to shoot this a lot, make sure you get them both exactly the way you like.0 -
Thanks for the come back however I am not interested in selling this peace at any price and am shooting it every day.I have enough parts to make 3 or 4 of these 92s so I can keep on keeping on untill they bury this little gun right beside me and I can use it on the devel when I get there.just thought i'd get some feed back on the sight as I had never seen one before.Agean thanks for the come back. 0 -
I can understand a rear sight of this style and have several how ever having to move a frount sight back where you need it after removing it from a scaberd in the field can cost a lost shot. 0 -
Sounds like a Beech front sight, most likely a Lyman. I believe they were an option, usually along with a Lyman tang sight. Bert can fill you in better than I can. 0 -
