winchester model 70 safety problem
i have a winchester model 70 that the safety is really hard to work, it is very hard to put back on to safe. anyone have this problem before? how can i fix it? does the pin in the shroud to hold the spring and plunger get pushed to the inside to remove? thanks for any help

The bolt need taken apart by a competent gunsmith, its not an uncommon problem in the post 64 safety. I did not do my own repair, but I ended up selling the gun because he could not fix it correctly. 0 -
Your problem can be solved with patience, a soft hand and a little mechanical and gun savy. Follow all safety rules. Remove bolt from reciever. Remove bolt shroud, firing pin and cocking piece together from bolt body. Remove cocking piece/firing pin from the bolt shroud-on older rifles there is a small screw on the left side of the shroud, unscrew and cocking piece/firing pin can be removed. On the right side of the cocking piece there is a 1/3-1/2 moon shaped round notch in which the safety rotates to place on fire and safety position. When placing rifle on safe, the safety moves the cocking piece/firing pin a small distance to rear and blocks it in place. When placeing rifle on fire,.the cocking piece is allowed foward to contact the sear and remove blocking effect. Usually the round notch needs to be lightly polished so that it is smooth. I first use an appropiate size chain saw file, if neccessary, followed by some 300-400 grit appropriate sand paper wrapped around a small wood dowel or the appropiate round stone. Clean cocking piece, install on bolt body, place bolt in reciever and try. Polish a little at a time. Your may have to remove and polish several times-patience-DO NOT remove a lot of material or you will have problems cocking the firing pin or rifle firing after pulling trigger and then moving safety from safe to fire. When you get the safety operating smoothly, break down one more time and lightly grease the notch, prior to grease you may wish to apply a little cold bluing. A small amount of each applied with a Q-tips is sufficent. I have never had to remove the safety from the shroud. Before you start become familar with taking the bolt down. If you don't have the nessessary schematic and procedures check the internet and your local library. Become familar with parts and procedure before attempting this fix. If you don't fully understand, DO NOT attempt this procedure. For the last time, be patience and do not hog out the notch or the safety will not function properly and rifle will be unsafe and you will ruin the cocking piece/firing pin. Before returning rifle to use insure the the safety operates properly. 0 -
if you have access to a new sear you might try replacing that.. In some cases those home gunsmiths think they need to stone the sear/ trigger engagement that then allowes the firing pin cocking piece to move to far forward making the saftey hard or unable to be engaged m another way to check is try a bolt from a different model 70 same production era that you know works and if you have the same problem then the sear is the problem 0 -
thanks laboy, i tried that on this piece, i assumed that is what it needed. there was a large shiney spot on that notch where i could tell there was interference. it works great. 0
