Rem 700 bolt

I bought a new
vls in 308 and
come to find out
when the bolt is closed
the bolt handle "points"
out almost 90 deg from the
receiver,not even coming close
to the machined notch in the
stock. It appears that the bolt
handle was attached to high
up on the bolt. As it is
it pretty much looks like a straight pull back
bolt Anyone ever run across
this before?

    Something is definitely not right with that, does it function normally except for that?

    If you bought it new I would take it back to where you got it.

    P.S. Someone may have taken the bolt apart and didn't reassemble it correctly. Do you have the book with it? If not there are instructions on the net on how to take the bolt down. It isn't hard to do and may just be reassembled incorrectly.

    yes I bought it new but
    in my own little way sort
    of burnt my bridges behind
    me with the owner.I didn't
    know I could take the bolt apart

    It's odd,I have a 243
    and I swapped bolts
    and the 243 bolt doesn't
    seem to seat properly in
    the 308
    (it looks roughly
    30 deg too high),but when I
    installed the "bad" bolt from
    the new 308 into the 243 it seated
    normally.
    I compared the bolts of each,
    they look identical.

    All of the Remington 700 rifles that I own the serial # of the rifle is etched in to the bottom of the bolt. I would check this for a match. Someone may have changed them and if so, it may need to be reheadspaced.

    first thing I
    check was for matching
    ser #---but the culprit
    was me-I installed the rear
    base scope mtg screw in the forward
    base. all set now

    it's helped me in some tite
    situations but I can still
    taste my shoe and even tho

    Glad you figured it out. I did the same thing with scope base screws once. It happens.

    damn i knew what was wrong before i even made it all the way through you posting. ( been there done that) anyway glade you figured it out. makes a person fell alittle less dumb that way.
