How do you cut down/recrown a rifle barrel?
Any tricks to doing this?
(Apart from respecting the legal limit of 16 inches)
How do you re-crown? I'd imagine that's the real hard part.

I'd suggest not molesting an historical artifact like a 91/30 and instead buy a 91/59 or an M44 Mosin. They make a pretty good "scout" rifle as is, not the least is the easy forward mounting of a long-eye-relief "scout" scope. There are several manufacturers of mounts that will replace the rear sight (without any permanent modifcation or damage) to the rifle. The barrel length is short enough; muzzle blast and flare must be seen, heard and felt to be appreciated at this length. Obviously a lot of powder is burning outside the barrel at this length. I have attached a picture of my 91/59 with Leupold 2x pistol scope attached to rear sight mount dovetail, and buck I shot with rig.[img][/img]

No, it's basic sound machining practices.
Remove the barreled action and then remove the barrel from the action. Use a lathe to cut and crown the barrel. The crown needs to be cut concentric and perpendicular to the bore.
There are other methods used by the home mechanics and cobblers involving hacksaws, crowning tools with bushings and a ball bearing with lapping compound but these are not recommended for quality and accuracy. They will tell you otherwise, I know.

just get a small cone oil stone ,(dremmell type) soak it in engine oil & polish the barrel end, steady away..just give it a nice chamfer, on the bore end..I certainly would not go down the hack saw road..No No..0 -
Guess a lot depends on your definition of functional. I've shortened several .22 "shooters" with hacksaw and crowned with a chamfering tool, brass cone and some fine valve grinding compound. Accuracy at 50 yards has been more than "functional" enough for me. (Minute of ground squirrel.)
I haven't tried this on any centerfires, though the principal would be the same; I'd never consider it on my Sako's, old Winchesters, etc,
AND, I left enough length to the barrel to allow someone who knows ass from elbo to do a professional job if I wasn't happy with the results.0 -
gunsmith will charge very little to do the job, THE RIGHT WAY. The crown has a very large effect on accuracy, as will a barrel not cut perfectly perpendicular to the bore.
