sks broke handguard catch, help!

have a sks with a broke handguard catch. the entire lever that you swing up to remove the hand guard is gone. just the pin is left. those things are riveted on and i dont see how to go about replacing it. shows them in the numrich catalog. has anybody ever had to replace one, or have the knowledge of how to do it? cant sell it till i get that fixed. any help would be great!

    I believe you would need to pound the old one out from the left to right. Pound the new one in then mash out the end of it. I forget what they call that type of rivot. A hydrualic press will make it come out easier.

    What country of origin is it?

    Google Mark Kubes Surplus, he may have the part.

    I had to replace one of those on one of my AK builds. I bought some cut barrel ends from Copes Distributing. Pressed the pins out with my press and hammered them into my AK.

    I've never done this, and I've have to actually go look at mine to come up with a good answer, but I'm sure this isn't "brain surgery".

    Once you get the replacement part, you have to do two things:
    a. Get the old pin out, and
    b. Install the new one.

    Getting the old one out might be as simple as driving it out with a punch from the broken end out.

    If its staked or riveted in, then you'll have to CAREFULLY drill out the ends (ie using a drill press or similar grinding bit) to remove enough metal to drive it out.

    Putting the new one is probably as simple as just inserting it then staking/riveting the end of the pin, with a hammer and/or punch.

    got the old one out. actually not sure if you can consider it a rivet it what? but like you said, need to put in and then smash or press one side to keep from pulling back through. my concern is that if i get it from numrich it will be a removed part and not a new one. im beleiving that removal would pretty much destroy the chance of putting it back on another gun? guess ill call and talk to their techs, if they got one. ordering from them can be a real guessing game!

    just called numrich, sold out! i dont think they ever had one. ive owned at least 75 sks's and ive never seen one of these broke? anybody got a clue as to where i can find one, thanks

    You STILL didn't answer the question: what is the country of origin of your rifle? It does matter, as there are differences in the size of parts.

    But, I don't recall ever seeing anyone advertise small parts for the SKS's made in any country. I think your only chance of getting a professional looking repair would be to take it to a full service gunsmith or a machinist.

    SKS parts aren't totally unavailable. I think you'll find this part if you keep looking around (eg try the auction site here, Google, etc).

    Note the directions on how to install it. The term used for expanding one side so that it doesn't pull through is "staking". If you squish one side into a little mushroom, that's called "riveting".

    In terms of a removed part, even if it were, I wouldn't assume that the part in question would be unusable. In many case parts actually can be riveted/staked, pulled out, then staked again.

    Its also probably possible to find an unused part. (I don't know if the above parts are used or not). Also, I'm not entirely sure if this particular part is interchangeable between different manfacturer's SKS guns, but the description says it is.

    If not, it might be possible to modify it to work.

    neal, it is chinese! to get one off you would have to disfiqure it pretty good, but as long as i could get it put back in place and reflare it out to hold, that would be good enough to sell. $20 is way too much. i do appreciate you guys help.
