colt 1911 value
bought a gun from a guy who inherited a house and found this colt 1911 in it. brought it in to have it cleaned up and offered to sell it cheap so i bought it. it is very rough finish probaly 20-30 percent gone. the stamping on hte side where it said "property of us governmaent is nearly all filed off but still legible. everything else is all original. gun was made in 1917 by colt. like i said it is in rough shape but is a good shooter and it came with 6 mags. someone must have been worried about the us property stamp for some reason to file it off? any ballpark figures on what this gun is worth?

Have you cleaned it with gun oil and perhaps a brass wool pad? 0 -
Hello Pictures would help DO NOT use wire brush Naval Jelly ETC tale a soft cloth wrap gun and then soak cloth in KROIL. then put entire pistol in a zip lock bag leave wet for 48 hours then with burlap bag or at most some brass wool or brass pot scrubber clean what rust will rub off . The pistol may be worth more as parts if these parts are all 1915 vintage. With pictures we may be better informed and able to ask questions to establish a value. 0 -
If it is all original, people are paying insane prices for early 1911s even with finish gone... IF all original. Clean it up gently like perry says and show pictures. 0 -
sorry dont have pics, after some phone calls owner was told it was bring back from ww1 by uncle. Pistol is marked property of US government on side. Any help would be appreciated. 0 -
