M1 Garand Front Sight, Rare?

I came across, and bought, a rare bird at a gunshow.

A Garand gas cylinder with front sight affixed... with no screw.

My Duff books are buried away right now, so I was hoping one of ya'all could check for me and see if ever there was a front sight made without a screw at all, and any detail would be appreciated.

    Is this just a single blade attached to the top of the gas cylinder or something the slides into the dove-tail groove of the normal front sight?

    If it looks like this one (Gas trap) you just call me and I'll take it off you hands in exchange for a brand new gas cylinder with a new front sight and screw attached [;)]

    It is actually a round metal cover for the front sight screw and was intended to prevent the average dog face from fooling around with his rifles point of impact by moving the front sight around in it's dove tail. Early sight screws were "stepped down" to allow the cover to fit into place while later screws had no step and would accept the cover. The early sight bases were very narrow and adjustments were limited, but the later bases were wider.

    Ill try to get a pic up, but it is not a gas trap. It is a standard tube with a standard front sight dove tail.

    The difference is the front sight has been put on, over the dove tail, but there is no screw....

    It is just a regular gas tube, not a trap, with a dovetail. The front sight has no screw...
