TOO TIGHT ????

I ask this question on the reloading site but have only gotten 1 answer. Maybe someone on the ask the experts might be able to help me. I have just begun loading .40 S&W with the RCBS taper crimp dies. I have reloaded for 30+ years, but never with the taper crimp. I used an unprimed case to set the dies. I thought I set the taper crimp correctly, but when I tried to get the bullet out with a kinetic puller it wouldn't even budge. Is this crimp WAY TOO TIGHT? If it is way too tight will this cause excessive pressures? Thanks for your help!

    Hello the very end of the case should be about .003 smaller then the outside diameter of the case 1/4 inch down from the case mouth The amount that you will need to turn the die down in the press will vary depending on bullet diameter and case thickness. I cant speak for the 40 but with 45 ACP Remington,and T.Z.Z. cases are thinner then say Federal WW and WCC Match Brass most 230 grain Ball bullets are .450 or .451 however most JHP bullets are .452. so you see there needs to be different settings depending on what you are loading in which case. Hope this helps.

    Heavy bullet pull will get you better ignition and keep bullets in place
    in light guns or heavy recoiling pistols and revolvers.
    I'd only be concerned when using max loads or getting poorer than usual accuracy.
