AK-47 Hammer Problem

Hi all, I read on a previous forum entry that one of the easiest ways to relieve the problem of trigger slap is to replace the current trigger with a Tapco G2. I'm in the middle of doing just that but the problem I'm having is that the hammer pin just won't seem to line up so that I can tap it out. The pin keeps getting mis-aligned and hung on the lip that keeps the retaining spring (or shepherds hook as I've seen it called) in place. I've jiggled the life out of the hammer moving it back and forth in every direction while applying pressure on the pin, to try and get it lined up.

Does anyone have any tips on aligning this little bugger so I can get it removed and complete the swap?

    You too the sheppards hook out of the FCG right?

    A trick on the hammer spring legs is is to pull them up over the hammer and tie them off with a twisty tie. From there you ought to be able to tap out the hammer pin. Maybe try a punch and hammer or mallet?

    Might also put the pin back in the right side of the receiver then start over.

    It can be pita to get out but should go.

    OK , as Ive said before , I f you dont know what your doing , please indeed have a "gunsmith" do it ... we see way too many firearms with problems from 'home "bubba" gunsmithing' ????

    Particularly if they are AKs, which are literally guns that can be built in garages with relatively crude tools.

    Thanks for the reply drobs! Yep, after I pulled the safety off, the sheppards hook was the first thing I removed. I think the hammer pin is just being a pain. I was just hoping to find someone who'd had this issue as well, and might have a trick to take the tension off the hammer so that the hammer pin would free-float a little more. Right now the hammer spring is just pushing the hammer willy-nilly and throwing the hammer pin out of alignment. I'll keep working at it, and let you know what I figure out.

    When you twist those legs of the hammer spring back over the head of the hammer it should take most of the tension off the hammer itself.

    That link should have a picture of the hammer spring legs pulled up around the hammer.

    My Sar1 hammer pin can be goofy like that but it will come out, just takes some fiddling.

    I wouldn't wail on the hammer pin but a tap with a punch ought to get it out of there.

    Got it done! It took me awhile, but I kept working and it finally popped loose. Not sure exactly what made it such a pain, because I inspected it while I had it out, and it looked perfectly normal. It was just in the mood to be a pain, I guess. Thanks again for the help!
