  I am in the market for an original WWII carbine. Before I buy, I need to get an education. Can anyone recommend a book or two? Is there good info available on the net somewhere? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

  When you have something that's one-of-a-kind, there's only one way to determine the value: put it up for absolute auction & sell it. Otherwise, it's anyone's guess as to what it is worth.
  
  Even if you insure it for an amount, in the event of loss, your insurance company will want high quality photos & a professional appraisal, neither of which you have at this time. Without seeing photos, I haven't a clue what you have, let alone what it's worth; the story you have told is quite short on facts.
  
  If you believe that your gun has any value, the least that you should have done by this point is store it in a good quality safe.

  the big thing when it comes to value is the condition of the gun.
  granted there's a couple of "beaters" out there that are priceless, but they are either the #1 serial number of an already coveted gun, or owned by T eddy, or patton etc...
  I'm guessing youre M1 is going to be more valuable to you, than anyone else, but there's a buyer for everything!
  you might want to pay a legit appraiser to estimate the value for it.
