which Savage 99 do i have?

I have a Savage 99 (1899 model it says on top of the front receiver ring) SN 277xxx. Forend comes off easily, and there is "OFF" with an arrow pointing. Does that mean this one is a takedown? Gun has a rotary magazine with counter, round cocked indicator, and a lyman peep sight fitted. There is also a lever lock, and caliber is 300 Savage. Stock has slight pistol grip, and a metal savage butplate is fitted. Any ideas on which one it is, or how much it is worth?

    I for one will be happy to help you but I can't begin to remember all the changes without the book in hand. I will check back and see if someone is asking the right questions and getting the right information and if not I will get back with you.

    Is the rifle drilled & tapped for a scope? According to the website:

    it was made in 1925.

    Pictures would be a great help, but I suspect you can pick up much info from the site. Just in general, the 300 Savage caliber is very common, I have one made in the late 50s, not a takedown model. Takedowns bring a fair amount more.

    According to the websight, this one was made in either 1925, or sometime after 1918.....Any idea what it would be worth? It is in about 90% i would guess. And no, it is not drilled and tapped for scope mount, only the Lyman rear sight.

    Value will vary quite a bit depending upon what part of the country you are in. In the Southwest they do pretty well, but .300 Savage is one of the most common calibers. If it really is 90%, where I am it would be asking between $500 and about $650, and probably sell just a bit below that. If you want to persue the model, drop me an e-mail and we will work it out.

    I believe what you're calling a lever lock is the old style safety, or it will have a tang safety if it was made in the middle 60s.[:)]

    Your gun is a 'takedown', remove the fore end stock & turn the barrel 1/4 turn in the direction of the arrow. Barrel should slide foreward free from the action.

    According to ser# you have either a 99-B or 99-C.

    The barrel length will tell you which model you have, the -B is 26" barrel & the -C was 'short rifle' at 22" barrel.

    Value depends largely on condition. It could run anywhere from 4 figures on down. On the home page of Gun Broker in the top right corner click on "smart search" (you have to be logged in on the auction side to use this feature) click on 'completed auctions' & then enter '99 ? savage'. Look at actually sold items to get a realistic idea of what the current market price is.
