Ruger 10/22 FTE fix?
I have a 10/22 that is factory synth/blue except for the inexpensive scope I mounted on it. Been slowly burning through a box of 500 of Federal's American Eagle and noticing that about 2x of every 10 rnds I get a FTE.
First of all, is this ammo that bad or does the 10/22 generally not like it?
Was thinking that the 10/22 wasn't normally that picky about ammo brands. Accuracy is good with this stuff. What do you guys recommend?

Many individual semi-autos prefer high velocity ammo, though I'm not saying that's the problem here.
All .22 ammo is scarce right now, but I've always had good results with both the common Federal "Automatch" ammo and the bulk-packed high velocity ammo.
As two suggestions, make sure your chamber and extractor are clean. Any gunk under or around the extractor can compromise its function, and obviously a dirty chamber can make extraction more difficult.
If that doesn't help, a new high-performance extractor wouldn't hurt.
They're fairly inexpensive and relatively easy to install.

Been there. . .done that [:D]. (I think I still have about 3 more swappable parts in mine. . .but mostly because I haven't gotten around to swapping out the charging handle and extractor yet).

The problem with your "two gun" approach is that then you need a new receiver to re-assemble the old parts into, and the damn receivers cost more than a whole used gun! [:p]
A bit more seriously, there is no need to swap out the extractor if you aren't having extraction problems. I'll occasionally get an FTE from mine, but its been infrequent enough that I haven't bothered with an extractor yet.0 -
Thanks Beantown, that just added $16 to the cost of my 10/22. I think that will replace the last piece of the orginal rifle, so I should be able to rebuild it and have two.
Edit: No extraction problem Shootah, but why should that one little part be the only one I have not paid triple to replace? At last count I was over $600 on this rifle, including a jeweled bolt. Now I just need some NASCAR stickers for it...0 -
Beantown gave you some good advice regarding a clean chamber and a better extractor.
Only two things I can add are that my 10/22 has better asccuracy with Rem Subsonics and the better and higher power the the scope the better the accuracy. I tried about 20 different types and the subsonics were the 2nd to a high grade and expensive import cartridge and then only by a millimeter or so at 30 yards. You might try a box of 50 when the supply situation improves.0 -
Some of the 22 ammo is notoriously dirty. Cleaning may be required fairly often. If this is a new rifle and you're firing the first 500 rounds, it isn't even broken in yet. I don't use bulk Federal 22 anymore after a bad experience with some occasional low powered rounds. Try to notice if an occasional round sounds weak and if that is the occurance of the FTE. I have noticed rounds striking the ground in front of the target at 100 yards-about 1' below the group. With a clean, smooth rifle these might function but with a stiff, dirty action a stoppage will result. 0 -
Same thing happened to a friend,we told him shoot the daylights out of it,he did, works fine now.Just keep shooting it. 0
