7.65 x 53mm for Deer
Does anyone have a pet load for deer with this round? I loaded up some for my Bro-in-law who's in Massachusetts and has a sporterized 1891 Argentine. I put a 180 grain .312 dia. round nose over 41 grains of IMR-4895. Thx!

According to the Lee Modern Reloading Handbook, ( Volume 1). Thats kind of a hot load for one of the old Mausers, ( No safety lug, on the bolt). Their maximum load for the 175 grain jacketed bullet, is 40 grains of H 4895. I don't know how much difference there is in the burning rate and pressure between the two 4895's, though? It might be alright with one, but a Kaboom! with the other? 0 -
The IMR & Hodgdon powders are not equal in burning rate/pressure. My Lyman manual had 40 to 44 grains of IMR-4895 as start & max. for the 1891 action. IMR-4895 was recommended as accuracy load at 2370 fps. Was wondering if anyone had other recipes? I don't have any H-4895 as I use IMR-4895 for my Garand in Match shooting here in Spring. In the data for the Garand using a 147 to 150 Military Ball to go approx. 2700 fps you can use 46.0 grain of H4895 OR 48.0 grains of IMR-4895. They are not the same. 0 -

I use 42.5 gr. of H4895 behind a 174 soft point in my 7.65x53 1909. The 41 gr. you mention should be about right for the 1909 and maybe right at max listed for the 1891. It's not so much about showing pressure signs with that case in that rifle. It's that that rifle, while very good quality, still isn't as strong as the 1898 model, 1909.
As a reloader, it is really essential to get hold of the rifle you plan to reload for and work up loads in it. Minute differences can cause big pressure changes when nearing the top of the pressure scale.
My latest Sierra used a maximum of 43.5 for a 175 so I think you're okay.0 -
Thanks for your insight. These particular re-loads were shot in my Bro-in-laws rifle. No problems and quite accurate. I consult many sources for re-loading info. I have many manuals, have copied others from gun magazines and look at info on the net, and seek manuals from Gun Powder Co.'s I have a sporterized Swede '94 and that has different loads worked up for that action, as well as, different ones for my Ruger 77 MKII in 6.5 x 55. The point being I respect the data on old vs. new actions. I wouldn't load to the "firewall" with any rifle. I've found that the "hottest" ain't the most accurate.
