1908 Mauser

I have this rifle I was told was a 1898 but it has model 1908 on it. The guy I got it from says it was a Brazilian Army import but there is no Spanish or Portuguese writing or stamps that I can find every part is matching numbers. The bayonet is in excellent shape minor pitting no rust great bore. Just wondering on value and correct model and history pics can be seen at they are large files and can be zoomed in on

    The Mauser rifle in the pictures is of the type generally referred to as a Mauser 98 design; in the year 1898 this design was first released and manufactured, and there were many significant improvements over earlier designs. This one was manufactured in Germany for Brazil by the "Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken", the German Weapons and Munitions Factory, usually abbreviated to DWM. It is marked with he Brazilian national crest on the receiver, though the crest area is somewhat worn. The model is known as the Model 1908; one supposes that is the year this particular model variation was contracted for production for the country of Brazil. Certain minor characteristics and variations, including the appropriate national markings, distinguish a Model 1908 from similar Mauser 1898's types. Original caliber was 7x57 Mauser. It is a quality rifle, and yours looks nice, and seems to have all matching numbers.

    Mauser models and history can be a little confusing at first.

    First and foremost, the reference used most often is to the particular action design or Model. In this case the M98 (Model of 1898), which refers to the date of the design not the manufacturing date. The M1898 Mauser is the standard bearer of modern bolt action rifles for strength, precision and safety.

    Next is the crest on the front ring which is a tell-tale for the country contract for whom Mauser manufactured the rifle. The rifles were most often made in Germany or one of their contractors and shipped to the country contracting with Mauser.

    From your photos on PB it looks like the rifle has been buffed with a wire brush. It would have been much better collector value wise to have left it alone, rather then doing this. The condition of the bore, would also factor into it's value, to a collector.
