U.S Remington Model 1903
Hi guys, im trying to get some information on my grandfathers 03. It is marked US Remington model 1903, the serial # is 3186271,it is of course 30-06 When was this gun made? To my knowledge my grandpa was in the Korean war and that's where he was issued this rifle, Ive looked in the blue book under Springfield Armory and it says Remington manufactured 350,000 of these in 1941, but I dont think Im looking in the right area. What are one of these worth on the Low to 50% rating, Very sorry not to have pics, My uncle has the gun and was just asking me if I could get some info on it, thanks in advance

According to The '03 Springfield Rifles' Era By Clark S. Campbell, the rifle was made in August 1942. I sincerely doubt that your grandpa was issued and stole the rifle in question. Rifles were not issued to be kept and taken home after the war. It is very likely that the rifle was bought by your grandpa or someone through the Director Of Civilian Marksmanship through which thousands of 1903 rifles were sold to NRA members in the 1950's and 1960's. If the rifle is complete and in original configuration I would say it was worth $500 to $750. Any modification such as sporterizing or refinishing by a gunsmith will cut the value substantially. 0 -
Thank you Herschel, that's what I needed. Not real sure how he came to posses it then. When I was growing up it was always grandpas war gun from Korea, but I'm sure he didn't steal it. The worst part about it as far as alterations go is he carved a big W in the stock so people would know its his[:(] 0 -
DOM is 41, according to my reference. The only bolt action 03's that were used in Korea were the "A4" sniper versions, as far as I know?
Value isn't promising, in the condition described. <50% would be considered "Beater" condition, by most collectors. If they would spring for it at all, it would be as a shooter, or to cannibalize for parts.0 -
A photo of the markings and bolt would tell if it was an A4 which could have come (illegally)from Korea.
The M1 rifle was the standard Rifle in Korea.
WW2 rifles and other weapons from a number of countries including the US turned up captured. I even had a Johnson rifle.
No US military weapons current or otherwise could be taken home or I would have a model of every Thompson variation at home.
School companies in Ft Monmouth issued Springfield A3s at least as late as 1953 for training, parades and such. They stayed at the fort.
They may have also existed in other forts and armories at least until that time.0
