Cleaning old guns

What's the best way to clean an old gun. I have several model 94s, oldest is in the early 40s but I do have a 73 that was MFG. in 1888. I know light oil on the metal but am wondering what to use on the bore.

    Murphy's oil soap on the wood, Kroil on the metal.

    careful at the muzzle end (crown) of the bore.i wouldn't use a metal brush unless it's a must

    Thanks, I was wondering about the brush. Is Kroil used instead of regular bore cleaner.

    KROIL IS A VERY GOOD SOLVENT, BUT ANY QUALITY BORE CLEANER WILL WORK. THE BORE BRUSH WILL NOT HURT EITHER, THE BEST WAY IS TO REMOVE THE BOLT AND CLEAN FROM THE BREECH END.

    I have been successful using a 75/25 blend of Shooter's Choice and Kano Kroil oil to clean bores. Just be carefull not to get it on the wood. May remove/soften some finishes.

    Watch out when cleaning the 94s. If you clean from the muzzle, much of the crud in the barrel will end up in the action. Removing the bolt and later reassembling in order to clean from the chamber end takes a bit of practice to get used to.

    On the '94's, I open the action but I stop short of the point where the lifter will rise. Then I line the inside of the action with one or more pieces of paper towel, to catch the crap that is carried out of the bore by the brush. An alternative is to use a bore snake, which can be fed in through the action and pulled from the muzzle.
