New to reloading

I am 99% convinced that I need to start reloading to support my .44 magnum habit. I would also like to reload small volumes of .45 ACP,.38/.357 mag and maybe a few 30-06's for hunting. The more I look at presses and parts the more confused I get. Would someone suggest a laundry list of what equipment I would need to get started? A good manual or reloading reference? From what I read, I am not qualified or do I need a progressive press, just the beginner basics. Of couse, I don't want to cut any corners on safety issues. Thanks for your help.

    When casting lead bullets there is a groove at the base. Is there something that fills the groove? The bullets have already been lubed. Is there anything else that needs to be done to the bullets before they are pressed? Thank you in advance for your time.

    By groove, do you mean the base is smaller than the body? If so it may be designed to accept a gas check. Or, are you loading DEWC's (Double End Wad Cutters), which often have a crimp groove on both ends.

    If you purchased these bullets pre-lubed and sized, they should be ready to load.

    The bullet is already lubed and sized. It is a round nozed type. At the butt end, it has a grooved ring all the way around it. No, the base is not smaller than the body. Would post a picture, but not sure how to do that yet.

    Sounds like a lube groove than. See my reply to your thread on the reloading forum.

    Grooved for a gascheck, which is highly reccommended on magmun type loads.

    If the base is the same diameter as the body I'm not sure how you are going to get a gas check properly sized installed on the bullet. It sounds more like either a crimping groove or a lube groove that didn't get any lube in it.

    KINGROB said a groove at the base. If the base is the small diameter as the rest of the bullet, you haven't cast a bullet that accepts gaschecks. I don't know of any handgun bullet that has a lube ring at the BOTTOM of the bullet.

    While casters sometimes don't fill all the grooves with lube, if they leave any open it is usually the TOP groove or two.

    It's a grease groove. If your bullets as they are, lead up the barrel then the lower groove needs to be lubed.
    If your lubricator sizer gives you the choice of lubing only the top or bottom groove then lube the lower groove.
