Out Of State Long Gun Purchase

Used to be a time when I could purchase a long gun in any state I might have been in by simply filling out the "yellow sheet". Then it changed to filling out the yellow sheet & an instant background check. In the past 6 months I have been refused a purchase for being a nonresident of the state I was attempting to purchase in. One dealer even told me if the states were ajoining I could make a purchase. Lots of dealers on this fourm, so what's the regs on this. Notice: This is referring to Long Guns Only

    I Live In New Mexico. I wish to purchase, in person, a rifle in Texas. Does the FFL Holder in Texas have to send the rifle to a FFL holder in New Mexico to make the transaction legal by federal standards?

    You can legally ship a long gun to yourself, So if you buy something in Maine, you can send it to yourself in South Carolina. The dealer you buy from would have to send it through an FFL in your state. Some states seem to allow sales of long guns to residents of contiguous states, and some allow a broader purchasing area. If it is allowed in contiguous states only, the a gun purchased in Maine, which is not contiguous to South Carolina would have to be shipped through an FFL as though it were an on-line purchase.

    Do the Maine purchase after you are cleared outbound from Canada on the homeward leg of your journey. You've then cut Canada from the equation. And shipping is no longer a problem. Best, Joe

    Outbound return will not work for me. If I put up with taking DW to Quebec City and Montreal and then Niagara Falls I will be returning home via Camp Perry[:D] another CMP purchase[:I]

    I think you answer your own question; Buy what you want and have it shipped to a FFL holder near your residence. I have done it quite a few times.

    In addition to my C & R license, I always carry (with his approval) the name & number/fax of my favorite dealer FFL with me just in case. I also call & touch base first - in this case I'd call & say "I'm heading to Maine & am going to spend a ton of money at The Kittery Trading Post, do I have the OK to use you as transferring FFL?"

    Also, if you know which gun stores you're hitting and you can get their fax, maybe your FFL would fax his up there in advance? I suppose that's not something he'd do for a one time deal, but if you're a long term good customer, perhaps?

    Doing the FFL Dealer transfer seems cleanest & best.

    And go to Newicks for the fried clams - they're better than The Weathervane. [^]
