Animal Defence Pump Shotgun
I am looking to buy a pump shotgun to use for animal defence e.g. dogs, bears, lions. I am looking mostly at the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, though I may be interested in the Maverick 88. I am going to install a pistol-grip for a rear stock, put on a full-capacity mag tube, a side saddle, and a laser sighting device. I am thinking of putting on either an Aimtech or B-Square scope mount. You know, the no gunsmithing wrap-around type. I am leaning towards the B-Square. I will install a green laser for better visibility in the daylight. I plan on using this gun for fast action off the hip. I am not at all considering a full stock. I am in a wheelchair, so the recoil of a 12 off the shoulder is quite bothersome. I would like any opinions you all may have on either of these three guns, and also any recommendations on accessories or ammo.

Sorry, I see nothing but problems with every part of your plan.
First, have you tried a gas operated 12 ga like the Remington 1100 with a full stock & recoil pad (like the trap or skeet models)? Recoil is much less than with a pump.
Second, most of us can't hit much of anything with a pistol grip shotgun. Recovery for the next shot could be difficult, more so if muzzle flip caused it to smack you in the face.
Lasers are OK for special circumstances, but only as a backup when you have a primary line-of-sight aiming device. You don't want to be waving your gun back & forth trying to pick out the spot from the background.
MY choice would be a S&W TRR8 (8-shot .357 mag revolver with 2 tactical rails), but that would run close to $2K. Or, an M1 carbine with 15 round mag (it fires a round = a .357 mag).

Recoil-reducing stocks are an interesting option. Howener, these put us back into the full-size long gun again. I have a cut down
A-5 with a 19in. bll. But this is too long for fast handling in chair and ATV. A friend just suggested a Puma in possibly 16" bll. length. Something to think about.

Do you live in a NFA friendly state? Pay the tax stamp and cut down a double or get one of the very small pumps ... of course, you are talking more background check, fingerprints, tax stamp, etc.0 -

I also defer to a revolver. Trying to shoot anything with a long barrel from a wheelchair or ATV is going to be a pain to bring up and into play.
Get an 8 shot 357 with 4,6, or even 8 in barrel or in 44mag, 45LC, or possibly 454 or 460.0 -

I will assume you know what you are and are not capable of welding, myself personally I can hit hit with a pistol gripped scattergun , and it would seem your range will be up close , this is animal defense and not hunting as your posts suggests.
With that being said IF bears were on the menu with slugs, despite many who will often suggest the typical soft lead slugs you pick up on your local gun shop, if I were serious about it , I would choose a hard cast slug made by by Dixie slugs because when your number of shots are going to be limited and it is close, I'd want all that penetration offered by the hard cast over the soft lead slugs.
Either the rem 870 or moss 500 would be my pick over the maverick , and alot of aftermarket goodies are out there for these guns.
I wonder if you will not have a problem with your laser moving under recoil. These little things , including lights can be hard to keep on when using big loads and less then super mounts. Personally I can fire the pistol gripped shotguns and still aim the weapon by holding it up in front of my face and taking a sight picture. Not once hace I punched myself but I have heard of fellas doing that. Shooting it like this does not bother my shoulder of course, after a few rds I do get a tingling in my elbow and the wrist starts to ache. But we are talking about defense and not shooting a round of trap so.........

Pick yourself up a Remington 870 in 20 gauge and forget about all the other stuff you want to add to it. They make a 20 gauge 870 with the extended mag tube, thats all you need. You don't need a laser, you don't need a scope, a sidesaddle to hold some extra rounds would not be a bad thing to add, but don't go crazy trying to accessorize with alot of useless add-ons. 0 -
Chris is spot on. All that other garbage would hardly be worth spending the money to make it "tacticool" especially since you state you will be using it from the hip. Practice Practice Practice doing it too because unlike in the movies it isn't alway so easy to hit things from the hip. There is another option if the 870 or Mossberg is too big--a H&R Tamer in 20 gauge--it is very compact( a smaller than a full size gunstock), easy to use & comes with a stock that holds extra ammo and might be easier to adapt to a scabbard on your wheelchair. http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Shotguns/tamer.asp
As others have also stated, trying to deploy any long gun in a hurry from your chair is going to be a lot more difficult--if you aren't in grizzly country then a 7 or 8 shot .357 with quality hunting style ammo(something along the lines of Buffalo Bore's 180 grain load would be more than enough and a whole lot easier to pack.0 -
As Neal said, look at a Remington 1100 / 11-87 (with extended Mag). Faster cycling time and if you are at close range, you are going to need every advantage you can get.
I also 2nd Neal's suggestion of a full stock. You can always tuck the stock under your armpit for added stability when shooting from your chair. Pistol Griped shotguns can get twitchy at both ends. You are going to want 100% stopping accuracy.
I'm not sure a laser on a fast moving target is a solution to your intended problem either.0 -
You might want to give a little thought to the deep $%^& you will find yourself in if you use such a weapon as you describe, on anything. It might be viewed as evidence that you were out looking for something to kill, a Rambo wannabe, are you? 0
