FFL to non-FFL

Does an FFL holder have to worry about someone that is a non-FFL holder, reusing his license when it is sent to purchase a gun from the non-FFL holder?

    sure he needs to worry... but nothing you can do until ATF computerizes things a bit more somehow... (but non-ffls do not need a copy of the license either)

    I guess I don't understand when you say non-FFL's don't need a copy. If I buy on this auction site from a non-FFL, the gun has to be sent to an FFL holder in my state, and they have to see a copy of the FFL's license, right?

    So, some non-FFL has a copy of my license. Imagine all the mischief he can cause, having guns shipped to the address on the license. I will allow that, and while I'm at it, I'll give him a few blank deposit slips for my bank account.

    Only FFLs are legally required to have a copy of the license of the FFL they are shipping to. Individuals are not required to have a copy. Individuals can use the first/last segments of a license number to verify licensee status and address at the ATF website.

    I guess the address could be changed, and someone not check it out. I asked the question because I didn't know, and the FFL doing my transfers doesn't want to send his license to a non-FFL.

    Find a different ffl to do your transfers.

    Yes, someone with a computer and copier could easily change a license address... but that's the antiquated system we are dealing with... and yes, there are cases of FFLs being forged... one guy in CA obtained 100's of firearms using a forged FFL and this is what led CA DOJ to creating their own approval system which dealers are required to use prior to shipping a firearm to a CA FFL.

    I guess what I'm missing here is that even though an individual could change a FFL license to say the address was his own, and buy firearms illegally on it, I would still think that someone would check out the license and see that the addresses don't match.

    Sure it would be easy to forge something out in the real world, but it's another to get it past the ATF ...who didn't see the change and are going to want to know why, when it gets checked out. My thing is a criminal might get away with it a few times but when the license gets checked is when he set himself up for a blindside. And hopefully a long jail term.

    All I can tell you is that the FFL that I've been using, doesn't want to send a copy of the license to a non-FFL, and I'm trying to understand why. I don't understand the workings of the rules for FFL holders, or what can and can't be done.

    Grizz,

    I've had that happen before. I went to the website and checked out the FFL and it was valid. Fraud is getting to be a bigger and bigger concern
