ORM-D for bullets?

UPS just delivered 500 bullets (not cartridges-just bullets) from Natchez Shooters Supplies and the package had an ORM-D sticker on it. I thought that was only required on ammunition shipments.

    Someone probably wasn't paying attention and slapped that sticker on there out of habit. As far as I know brass and bullets don't require it.

    Bullets(except tracers) and unprimed( or fired) brass can be shipped without the ORMD label and also by the Postal Service.

    At any rate, you most likely paid more for shipping than you should have, as you most likely paid a hazmat fee.

    ORM-D is a hazardous materials classification...so yes...when you ship with ORM-D on the box, you are getting drilled for a Hazmat fee. Call UPS or FED EX and ask. n It is also available on-line under CFR 49 rules and regs.

    No, it means Other Regulated Material - D. The D doesn't stand for anything. There used to be 5 subclasses of the ORM hazard class, A through E. All of them, except D, have been integrated into the other DOT hazard classes.

    The purpose of the ORM-D hazard class is to give relief from parts of 49CFR for shipments of limited quantities of hazardous materials (usually consumer commodities). ORM-D materials are excepted from most of the marking, labeling, packaging, and shipping paper requirements in the regulations. Because of that, HAZMAT fees are rarely charged for ORM-D materials.

    You still don't have to pay an extra fee, hazmat or any other(unless over 66 pounds). You box it up ship it with the correct markings on the box and are charged according to weight, just like anything else. If it were powder or primers, then yes, you would be charged a hazmat fee and must mark the box according to the regulations for that.

    Correct you are, as the ORM-D is the haz class fee.


    There is no Haz mat fee with ORM-D, its the same as if you packaged as any box, and get charged for size and weight.
