Rem. rolling block 20 gua.

I can find nothing about this Remington rolling block shotgun. Action is identical to the rifle in all respects except it is a shotgun. There is no model name or number.

Only lettering I can find on this shotgun is a bunch of pat. dates, as follows;

E. Remington & Sons Ilion, NY. USA Pat may 30th 1864 may 7th, june 11th mov. 12th, Dec 24th 1872 Dec 31st 1872, sept 31st 1873 Jan 13, Mar 16th (unreadable) all aft of hammer.

Can you approximate a value? Seems to have pretty low mileage, is in great shape.

    According to "Flayderman's Guide", original Rolling Block shotguns were made by Remington, were in 16 & 20 Gauge only.

    If your's is a 12, not likely made by Remington. This would have a negative effect on collectors value. Lot of the BP #1 military rifles were sold over the years by Bannermans and other surplus arms dealers. Many times these old Black Powder rifles were converted to shotguns, for marketing purposes.

    Thanks for your reply. You sure pointed something out to me. The gun had a tag on it with either the number 12 or 21, couldn't exactly tell which from the writing. I assumed it was a 12 as in 12 gua. After your answer I tried a 12 gua shell and it won't fit. You are correct Sir, a 20 gua shell fit like a glove.[:D]

    If it can be established that it's a original Remington made shotgun, rather then a military surplus rework? There would probably be substantial collector interest.

    Ok, so how do I go about finding out that info? How does one tell if it is a military rework?

    Frank DeHaas says the factory Rolling Block Shotgun has a groove in the top of the receiver to align the front bead for those who aim a shotgun. Yours has the cut down hammer nose he describes and illustrates. He says there is also a difference in the contour of the breechblock to pass the large rim of the shotshell but does not show it.
    Not to say a converter might not have done the same things, but it is at least a step in the right direction.

    It does have the groove on top of the receiver. I'll have to keep digging to find out more.

    i NOTICED A SIMILAR ONE SELL ON THE AUCTION SIDE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO FOR >$400. I HAD A SIMILAR SHOTGUN ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO.
