Question about legal transfer of long rifle

Sold a rifle to a guy who loves 75 miles away, in Georgia. I live in SC. Is it legal to just meet him halfway and exchange funds for rifle, or do you have to ship through an FFL for long rifles?

    You have to ship it to an FFL dealer in his home state...OR...You can both meet at a dealer in your state, hand the rifle over to the dealer (for a fee), have the dealer transfer it to the buyer and then he goes on his merry way. Long guns are allowed to be purchased by out of state buyers, but only from an FFL dealer, not from a private party.

    You could also meet at a ffl dealer in his state and hand the gun to the ffl dealer and have him do the transfer.

    Just a question about this subject..... If the seller's home state of SC allows "face to face" selling of LONG GUNS, with no paper work involved, Why couldn't the buyer just drive to him and show him proof of age and pay for the gun ????? Just wondering..... bob

    Because LEGALLY it is against the law. Here is the section direct from the ATF, http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faqindex.htm

    (B3) May an unlicensed person obtain a firearm from an out-of-State source if the person arranges to obtain the firearm through a licensed dealer in the purchaser's own State? [Back]

    A person not licensed under the GCA and not prohibited from acquiring firearms may purchase a firearm from an out-of-State source and obtain the firearm if an arrangement is made with a licensed dealer in the purchaser's State of residence for the purchaser to obtain the firearm from the dealer.

    [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and 922(b)(3)]

    SC and other states allow face to face selling of long guns between residents of that state only. If the buyer is a resident of another state, then legally it is an interstate transaction.

    Good to know. I, therefore, can hand-carry [long gun-across state lines]for disposition purposes, so long as the disposition is handled at the destination by an 01FFL? Am I interpreting this correctly? Thanks, Joe

    In the Header You make mention of a <Long Rifle>???? Are you discussing a Kentucky Long Rifle? If its a Long Rifle as Posted...You can deliver it personally to Him......

    If it is a modern firearm, made after 1898, then it needs to be transacted thru a dealer in his/her state. If it is an antique, or muzzleloading firearm, then it can be done FTF.

    There have been several threads on this subject in the past, that you might do a search on and look them up.
