WINCHESTER MODEL 61

did they make a model 61 winchester in 22 magnum with an octagon barrel. i have been told yes and no can someone send me a picture if they did

    Good evening jwb. I find no reference to a Winchester model 61 in 22 magnum with an octagon barrel. Model 61s with octagon barrels were made in 22 short, 22 long rifle, and 22 WRF. These barrels were the standard 24 inches and add considerable value to the rifle from a collector's standpoint.

    The answer is NO, Winchester did not make any Model 61 22 WMRs with an octagon barrel.

    isnt the 22 WRF almost identicle to the 22 mag? just by looking at them its hard to tell the difference. maybe thats what he is refering to?

    The 22 W.R.F. cartridge is the black powder predecessor to the 22 WMR. The case is dimensionally the same except for the length, which is .10" shorter. Ballistically, there is a very big difference. The W.R.F. was/is loaded with a 45-grain lead bullet @1137 fps, whereas the 22 WMR is loaded with a copper jacketed 40-grain bullet @2000 fps.

    22 W.R.F. ammo can be shot in any firearm chambered for the 22 WMR, but not vice versa (it is similar to shooting 22 Shorts in a 22 Long Rifle chamber).

    The Model 61 was offered in both the 22 W.R.F. and the 22 WMR (very late production only), and the W.R.F. was available wiht an octagon barrel. The 22 WMR was a round barrel only. Both are very collectable and are worth substantial premiums, especially so in the higher graded conditions.
