1911 question- marks on brass
Shooting my Colt 1991 today, I noticed a dimple on all the spent shell casings. It is a small line that is less than a 1/16 long that runs sideways(not front to back) on the case. It is about 1/2 way between the rim and mouth. I was shooting remanufactured, and dirty, ammo, and I noticed a shiny spots at the top of the feed ramp, and the bottom edge of the breech face. If I understand right, the round is supposed to tip up and into the barrel. Could the barrel not be tilting down enough? Or is the feed ramp just too dirty because of the remanufactured ammo? This happened with two different magazines, and with lead ball, and new UMC jacketed ammo. Is this something to be concerned about, and will it effect reloading this brass? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello without seeing the dimple you speak of everything I say is just my best estimate of the problem # 1 the barrel does tip down at the rear to unlock however this downward angle is less then 5 degrees and is not there to facilitate feeding.# 2 it sounds like the extractor might have too much tension on the case head this increases the force needed to slide the head up the slide breach face on loading this holds the back of the case down and causes the transition between feed ramp and chamber/bore to Dent the case. #3 it may be the reloads do not have a taper crimp on the case mouth and this can cause the round to be hard to start in the chamber and causing the dent. #4 it may be that the feed ramp needs to be polished at the transition area between the feed ramp and the chamber/bore. #5 it may be the magazine/magazines are holding the case too long before letting the rear of the case rotate upward. for the OAL and nose shape of the reload& #6 it could be some-one installed a recoil buffer [xx(][:(][V][:(!]and this has prevented the slide from going all the way back in recoil and causing the slide to start to close before the cartridge has risen to the correct height. AS YOU CAN SEE there are many things that could cause the problem. FIRST try some other ammo. then some new magazines and if that fails then find a good 1911 PISTOL SMITH. The brass could be hitting the slide on the way out. You might need a little stronger recoil spring. 0 -
Classic case of ejection port denting, & nothing of great concern. Can easily be tuned-out if desired, just consult w/ an experienced 1911 pistolsmith for details. A minor downside is brass life - fatigue cracks may appear in that area & if so, they will definitely limit the # of times those cases can be reloaded. 0 -
Hello DCS & BO400879 Guys either misunderstood the original question OR the two other answers misunderstood the location of the dent . The way I took it it was NOT the case mouth and NOT running front to back but rather HALF WAY BETWEEN MOUTH AND CASE HEAD/RIM and only a thin LINE. This sounds to me like a failure to having a smooth feed to fully chamber NOT an ejection problem . Again I may be wrong that is why I would love to see pictures of this LINE. I hope the original poster will come back and clear this up. 0 -
Yes perry shooter, it is in the location that you described. I have not attempted to post pictures here yet, but I may have to. Another guy at the range looked at the line, and leaned toward a feeding problem as opposed to an ejection problem. But I would like to know what bo400879 was referring to. After seeing DCSs response, I lined up several cases, and the line is very consistent, which I dont think it would be if they were hitting the slide. My next step is to detail clean the pistol taking extra care to shine up the feed ramp and chamber. 0 -

Been a while here. If the issue hasn't been resolved, pls put-up some pics of the suspect/fired brass from this piece, if convenient.
Might be a minor tuning issue.
