What do you think about buying the Olympic .223 Plinker and then buying the free floating heavy stainless barrel upper for it. Do you think that would be a good investment?

I've been looking pretty hard at the Ruger SR 556. It's a gas piston. The new mini 14s (M-14/20C) look pretty sweet too. I'd probably take one of these two over most (other) black rifles.
Sig makes a nice one if you can afford it. And I'd sure give FN's SCAR 16s or 17s a good look before deciding on something different.0 -
Stay away from remington, I have heard to many complaints.
I wouldnt waste the extra money on the S&W logo, unless you want with 15T model with the troy "monotlithic" style hand guard, it is a good deal, and will retain its value. All of the S&W guns are, or used to be built by Stag Arms..
Stag makes a great product the point is you will save money if you buy the rifle from them instead of S&W, if you want just a more conventional configured carbine.
Colt, CMMG, or DS Arms also build good ARs. CMMG And DSA will build you pretty much anything you want. The Colt 8920 and 8940 are probably the two most popular colt carbines.
I dont like M-4 profile barrels, they seem silly to me, The hole point of the step in the barrel is to mount an M203 grenade launcher, which we cant own, and many of the barrels are contoured wrong under the handguards, and wouldnt even interface with an M203 anyway.
I prefer either slim A1 countour or medium countour barrels both with strait profiles in front of and behind the gas block. A chrome lined bore and chamber is always a good to have with chrome molly barrels.
Look at a LMT or LWRC if you was a piston AR.
If you want something that is compact and reliable and just as accurate as any AR-15 go with a MSAR STG-556.0 -
There are only a few to stay away from, Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorn, Century come to mind.
After that they are all about equal. Most of the part are only made by a few places and sold out to all the companies. The ones that are not are going to be found in guns costing in the $2000+ range.
Many companies make complete guns under different names and charge different prices depending on the name brand.
Find one that is set up the way you want in a price range you are willing to pay and go for it. It wont take long before one becomes 2 and 2 becomes 4 ect.0 -

S&W makes their own now. As far as the MSAR one large factor someone may want to think about is longevity (yet unknown) and spare parts availability in the future.0 -

I like colts( thd they hold their value) but that new FN SCAR is looking pretty good!0
