S&W Sigmas 9mm

I was over at another gun forum where I spend most of my time where a new poster was singing the attributes of High Point pistols especially the 9mm.He went on to say they were as good as any glock,
h&k,s&w,sig and on and on.I asked how could you put a $200 pistol
in the same category as $500-$600 firearm? I was told it went bang
every time and I probably didn't know what I was talking about because I never had a high point pistol.Well I had a 45 acp for a very short time and got rid of it post haste.I pointed out for fifty
bucks more he could of had a real pistol a S&W SIGMA with a lifetime
warranty with two magazines.I've had a sigma and put several thousand rounds through it with no issues ! You start this hobby with what you can afford!The sloppy triggers you get use to.My next
step up was to glocks and after that to springfield 1911,I still
prefer glocks for CCW.

    This is the help or question side of the forum not really discussion, but since I have owned two Sigmas I can say spend about $60 more and get the Smith M&P.

    Yes the Sigmas go bang, but there are so many better options. Typically when one rants about how great the Sigma is, it is either
    1. Their first Handgun 2. Great Price.

    I say for the same money you can get a Pre-owned semi pistol with a better trigger, better accuracy and the go bang every time reliability. Let the Iraqi army have the crappy Sigma's.

    Anyone who thinks a Hi-point pistol is a great gun either isn't being honest, or simply hasn't tried many pistols.

    This is like the high-school student who has convinced themself that their '79 Pinto is a "bitchin" ride.

    Unlike the worst of the third-tier "junk" guns, the Hi-point is a functional pistol, and its a lot better than nothing, but it has very little going for it in the way of accuracy, strength, appearance, or good trigger pull.

    Its not simply a question of price. The Hi-point is made of plastic and inferior metal, its not manufactured to high tolerances, its got an odd balance, and it uses a blow-back action which isn't very accurate. It will go "bang", but there is a lot more to it that than separating a low-end gun from a better one.

    Likewise, anyone who thinks a Sigma is a great pistol probably hasn't tried any guns other than a Sigma or a Hi-point.

    The Sigma probably *IS* two notches above the High point, and I'd rather have a Sigma than a High point or pretty much any of the "junk" guns from third-tier manufacturers.

    Still, as has been pointed out again and again in innumerable threads on this topic, for roughly the same dollar cost as a new Sigma, there are a dozen other well-built surplus or foreign manufacture pistols on the market that are FAR better guns.

    I would say the Hi point for $150 is a good deal. Im not saying its a good gun and by all means saying it doesnt compare to a glock or anything else for that matter but what Im saying is for the price its not bad. You get what you pay for, no doubt, but for someone who only has $150 its a good deal for a semi decent gun.

    To me Sigma were nothing more than an entry level pistol that put more shooters in our sport. Unfortunately,the first editions were
    lemons and gave the brand a bad name and the law suit glock brought forth and won didn't help positive brand reinforcement.All of this
    takes a long time to over come and you need an exceptional product
    to do that and clearly the sigma isn't.Price helps and products like
    high point make sigma look good!Did you know high point even has it's own forum ? I couldn't believe it but they do!I stepped up from
    a sigma to S&W99 in 45 acp the precursor to the MP line.Best triggers on pistol ever!This pistol is well made and I can't understand why it didn't receive better support from the law enforcement community as they are well made compared to mp line.

    While you're unlikely to find a better modern centerfire semi-automatic pistol in 9mm luger (or bigger) at that price point, I think even at that price range there are still better guns to be had.

    For example, you can still find used Smith and Wesson .38 special "military and police" model 10 revolvers for $160 each. These will never lose their value, are made by a world-renowned manufacturer out of high quality steel, and are as close to 100% reliable as you can get from a pistol.

    Remember, Hi-points are "junk" guns that lose in resale value if used.

    There are an assortment of 9x18mm Makarov-type pistols in the $200 (or less) price range that are more reliable and stronger than any Hi-point, if somewhat less powerful. These are also more compact, and probably more accurate.

    stay away from the new sigmas some work some dont
    i wouldnt gamble with my life with one of those
    the old ones are reliable c model or f same trigger pack as glock
    personally if you dont need it right now save up more money and get something more reputable
