Redhawk vs. Super Redhawk?

Is there a difference between a Ruger Redhawk and a Ruger Super Redhawk? If so, what are the differences? Thanks

    Yes there is a difference. The frame on the Super Redhawk is extended out over the rear of the barrel further than it is on the Redhawk.

    The Super Red Hawk is a larger frame. Of you look at the Ruger specs for both guns in the 7 1/2 inch barrel length, you will notice that the weight on the Super is more...reason being...more frame.

    Yes I will give you that the RH does weigh more than the SRH, in that barrel length. I spoke wrongly about that before checking that. The point I was driving is the SRH has a more massive frame, which can handle warmer rounds than the RH, Like Beany has pointed out. Yes, Hamilton Bowen has done some amazing conversions on the SBH, and RH to some big mean critter getter's like the 475, and 500 Linebaugh, but it takes substantial meat to handle the 454 Casull as a factory gun. So, my point in tact, is that the SRH is designed for higher energy cartridges, and is more massive, is still undisputed. Kind of amazing how Ruger done that...made a stronger gun that weighed less, with a larger frame.

    Quite a difference actually. Besides being heavier and a different frame design, the trigger mechanism is totally different in the Super Red Hawk. IMHO the Super Red Hawk is a better choice for somethings like hunting. Other than being a little on the ugly side, maybe homely is a better word, I think the Super Red Hawk is an awesome hunting handgun. A good holster set up is necessary if you are going to pack it around for a ways. But, I think the extra weight helps with the recoil a bit. Mine is chambered in .44 magnum.

    As mentioned, the Super Redhawk has a longer and heavier frame. Its not just more strength and less recoil (from the heavier weight), but also that the extended frame has a built in scope mount, making it easy to get a rock-solid mount with a pistol scope.

    Another difference is the grip, with the Super Redhawks having a different recoil-absorbing grip out of the box.

    The front sight ramps on the two guns are a little different, but I think that's just to compensate for the larger frame on the Super Redhawk. Both guns have interchangeable front sights, which is nice if you want to swap out the ramp sight for a target-style one or one of a different color, etc.

    In general, the Super Redhawk is one of the strongest production revolvers and (unlike the Smith and Wesson, for example), will stand up to nearly unlimited maximum power loads without shaking loose.

    If you want a platform for high-powered handloads, or competitive silhouette shooting, this is a good one.

    Per Ruger, the 7.5" Stainless Super Redhawk weighs 53 ounces.
    Per Ruger, the 7.5" Stainless Redhawk weighs 54 ounces.

    I think the difference in mass can be explained by the grip, with the SRH having a "peg" grip with less metal in it. But clearly, the SRH *DOES* have a beefier frame, and I think that still means more mass out front toward the muzzle to reduce muzzle flip.

    One other difference not already mentioned, is that the Redhawk uses a one-spring design, but the Super-Redhawk uses a more versatile two-spring design, making it easier to do a trigger job on the latter.

    Lastly, there are differences in configurations available. The SRH is available (or at least USED to be available) in bigger calibers (eg .480 Ruger, .454 Casull). The RH is available in .45LC, and also has (or used to have) shorter barrel options.

    Would you all believe that a 7.5" Red Hawk weighs one once more than a 7.5" Super Red Hawk? Look it up in the RUGER website. Posters tsr1965,Robin and beantownshooter you guys are wrong,the Red Hawk has always weighed 1 oz more than the Super Red Hawk. [:)]
